Our of pure curiosity

Post by 7Tesla » Wed Feb 27, 2013 11:56 am

I was wondering these.
1. At what age are a female & a male capable of mating?
2. At what age is a male "kicked" out of a pack?
3. Is it possible for a female to be driven out of the pack she grew in? If yes, at what age?

1.
The female wolf reaches sexual maturity at 2-4 years and has one estrus cycle per year, in February or March.
The male wolf matures sexually between 2 and 3 years depending on pack status, and may or may not exhibit RLU.

2.
Per Dave Mech and Steve Fritts: Wolves can disperse as early as 5 months or as old as 5 years. However, most wolves disperse between 11-24 months of age. Also, most wolves disperse in autumn and early winter or around spring denning season, although they may disperse at any time of the year.
3. I don't really know, and I don't find information about it. But if we guide for my second answer here, it's more alike the female or male will decide when to split from the pack at the age mentioned above.

3. As Sintact mentioned, generally most wolves disperse to create their own families, rather than stay within the pack. If they do end up staying, however, they may be chased off during breeding season in particular when hormone levels are high and the dominant female animal will harass the other females during this time as well.
