Gender Bias?

Post by Nightfire » Sun Jul 29, 2007 6:23 pm

Just wondering, as far as human knowledge goes, is there any gender bias among wolves?

Yeah I heard that when males fight its normally not to the death, but it is when females do. Is that true :?:

This response if from Lori Schmidt the Curator at the International Wolf Center:

Wolves tend to have gender specific rank orders, meaning that the males
dominate other males and the females dominate other females.
But the dominant male or female can dominate either male or female lower
ranking wolves, typically a wolf pack is made up of parents and their
offspring, with both parents taking an active role in the
pack. A few years ago, Yellowstone's Druid pack was clearly
led by the more dominant female, some believe the dominants co-lead based on their best skill. Some wolves may have stronger predatory skills,
and may take the lead on the hunt. This can be either male or
female. We also know that some males have very strong care gaving
behaviors with pups. This is likely driven by a hormone called
prolactin, stimulated by the presence of pups. So, I guess the
answer is no, because each wolf has its' own behavioral traits and skills
that determines its' behavior, not the gender of the animal.

You have to also look at the information at the time, a while ago only men studied nature and science, so being human, they would give a biased outlook on science and such like the alpha male controls the pack. Now, both men and womyn study science and nature so, although there is some biased information, the status of female wolves has become more apparent. Its all about wolf personality, some wolves, either dogs or sunshine, are more or less aggresive than others. Others might shy and not willing to put up a fight while the other sibling will use violence to make their message clear.

ninty nine percent of the time females will not fight and if they do they fight to the death or until the male come or some how lets her know to get away a little so he can take over the fight. so the males will some times fight to the death or they will let the fight go until one of them surrenders.
