early winter

Post by larkaputnar » Fri Aug 13, 2010 7:22 am

Hi there,

i was wondering, would a wolf mate early in winter and give birth a little too early than normal. I mean because they give birth in spring, would there be any curcumstances where a wolf might mate a little too early and the pups are born very early spring, when it is still a litte cold?

Thanks.

I think it depends on when a wolf finds a mate late in the winter or in the early spring (correct me if I'm wrong). Or when they found it time to have pups.

if the wolf finds a mate they would wait until spring then the female would have them in summer.

I believe the female will only go into heat during a certain time, so it may be uncommon that they have their pups in early spring.

Mating season can be anywhere from January to April with the alpha female having only five to seven days of oestrus. During this time, the alpha pair may move out of the pack temporarily to prevent interruption from other pack members. Also the alpha pair is almost always the only pair to mate, to avoid over population.

The wolves mate in late winter around March, mostly in the middle of the month. The pups are born sometimes in late May, it depends also when the mother became pregnant.

As said, female wolves only go into heat during winter and mate then, usually placing the birth of their pups in late spring/early summer, around May. I guess some of it does depend on the female: when she goes into heat and how long the gestation period is. I hope this helped, anyway!

The standard gray wolves breed in late January and early February, not in spring. Their offspring are born late April or early May, not in summer.
