Man who bought wolf on Craigslist must find it a new home
by Elizabeth Dunbar, Minnesota Public Radio
October 20, 2009

St. Paul, Minn. — Authorities in Austin are asking the owner of a pet wolf to find another home for it.

The owner found the wolf for sale on Craigslist, an online classified advertising service, and bought it from a person in Rochester, according to Austin Police Chief Paul Phillip.

Philipp said Tuesday that his department confiscated the wolf after receiving a call from the owner's mother-in-law expressing concern about it.

"She was concerned about the welfare of her grandchildren," Phillip said.

It is illegal to keep wolves as pets in the city of Austin and in Mower County.

The 1-year-old female wolf, named Dakota, is now being held at the city's animal shelter until the owner finds a new home for her.

Phillip said police doubt the animal is 100 percent wolf, but are treating her as a wolf after the owner supplied documentation from a veterinarian.

Phillip said the owner didn't know about the ordinance prohibiting wolves, and that the city will keep the animal until she's placed in a new home.

"The animal appears to be a very nice, well-behaved animal," Phillip said. "We're not in any hurry to see it destroyed."

Someone actually bought a wolf? Wow. But at least they said the animal seemed socialized and polite...

Thanks for sharing this, pawnee, this is interesting.

Interesting. I actually live in Rochester- the laws must vary by county, because apparently it's legal to keep wolves here (If you buy a permit). I often see wolves or wolf-dog hybrids in the local newspaper's classified section under "Pets". Even worse, it seems like they breed the wolves often to make money selling pups. I wish it would be made illegal here, no one should keep wild animals.

Attention needs to be paid to the person that sold the wolf in the first place. For one, their not suppose to sell animals on Craigslist (except a minor rehousing fee). And secondly, how irresponsible of that breeder to do that. A responsible breeder should have checked references of who and where the animal was being sold to.

At least the animal is getting taken care of.

I really hope the poor wolf finds a home. :(

Just because it's a wild animal doesn't mean it can't be a good pet, if you train it the right way. And the person may not have been a breeder. What if they had found a wolf pup in their backyard that didn't look healthy, so they raised it, but then needed to rehouse it for some reason (not very likely, but still.....?) You'd be suprised the amount of info people fail to put into Craigslist ads.

Once agian...people with too much money and too little of common sense to see something wrong in buying exotic animals from a shifty online auction site....I feel bad for the wolf and having to be put through so much.

Wow...someone actually bought a wolf off of Craig's List...seems you can buy anything off the internet now-a-days!

Anyhoo, I hope the wolf gets a good home! Thanks for sharing this :)

i believe people should be more careful when buying something on the internet. for one you did the person who bought the wolf even know if it was a polite nice wolf or a dangerous rabid wolf. its important to do some research before jumping into something that would be a big responsibility. and the internet is such an unreliable place, you could have been giving money to a person and getting a plastic two inch wolf that looked real. not to mention who would buy a wolf. while i would love one i don't think i would go out and buy one. Just my opinion.
