Howls and Growls: An Audio Outing

Post by loboLoco » Fri Nov 18, 2022 12:45 pm

Yesterday Susan and I traveled to the Wildlife Science Center in Stacy, Minnesota to try to capture a variety of vocalizations by wolves and other animals. While we have quite a good number of these sound effects in the game, they still get repetitive, so more is always better. Our host was Megan Callahan-Beckel, Animal Care Coordinator, who took us around the facility and used various methods to prompt the animals to howl, growl, snarl, whimper, and whine.

Field recording is always a challenge but fortunately, with Megan's help, along with other WSC staff like Animal Care Specialist Elizabeth Oechsle (who played WolfQuest when she was young!), we captured a nice variety of usable audio clips. And just being there, surrounded by over 100 wolves along with so many other animals, was an incredible experience. Today's devblog takes you along on this day trip.

The WolfQuest saga will continue! Stay tuned for more news in upcoming devblogs about it and other new features!

Once the game is completed on PC/Mac, we will turn our attention to other platforms.

We do not announce specific release dates. We will release them when they are ready.

This is very exciting! I would love to go to the Wildlife Science Center one day! In the meantime, I can’t wait for all of the new varieties of wildlife sound to come to WolfQuest! It will certainly make the game even more interesting! Every time I think it can’t get any better than it already is, you blow all of the fans away with something new and exciting- from the Saga and Lost River expansion, to the subtle things like more audio sounds and improved snow. Keep up all of the good work, and I am eager to see where WolfQuest will go!

This is great! I love it when the WolfQuest team goes on these research trips, it's always really cool to watch. I can't wait to see how the new audio is integrated into the game!

I can definitely second this. It seems a lot of fun to go and observe, learn some new things too. I can't wait to see how these new sounds are implemented in the game!

Neat! Looking forward to hearing some of those new wolf (and cougar if they make the cut!) sounds in the game in the future. ^^

These dev outing blogs are always an interesting watch! :)
