Achievements: Share Your Ideas!

Post by loboLoco » Thu May 20, 2021 3:57 pm

Achievements are one of the remaining features still to be added to WolfQuest: Anniversary Edition, and we will be focusing on them soon. We’ve been working on our plans for achievements, on and off, for quite awhile. We are going to avoid the kind of grindy achievements (Kill 10 Elk! Kill 25 Elk!) that we had in WolfQuest 2.7/Classic, instead focusing on three kinds:

* Achievements that you earn while completing the main game quests.
* Achievements that are related to the main quests but require some extra effort.
* Achievements that are more exploratory, such as finding some collectable objects.

But we suspect that many players have ideas for achievements too, and if you’re one of those players, now’s the time to share your ideas! Describe them below or submit them as a feedback report (press F11 in game). We’ll review them as we refine our list and create the final set to implement soon. We’re looking forward to reading them!

_______________

WolfQuest: Anniversary Edition is available now for PC/Mac on Steam and itch.io, as Early Access. The game currently includes Episode 1: Amethyst Mountain, Episode 2: Slough Creek, Lost River: Classic, and multiplayer mode in Amethyst and Lost River. (Slough Creek multiplayer is coming soon,.) The mobile version will come after the game (including Slough Creek) is completed on PC/Mac platforms. The next episode, Tower Fall (DLC) will follow. We do not announce specific release dates. We will release them when they are ready!

I know! What about an achievement for finding a fish carcass dropped by an eagle? They're incredibly rare. Maybe it could be called "Something smells fishy"?

I also think that players should unlock an achievement for surviving all the way to age 8+, it could be called "respect your elders!" :-)

Or, maybe for the exploratory achievement, players could earn an achievement for visiting all the marked places in Amethyst Mountain, Lost River, and/or Slough Creek (e.g, if a player visits The Burn or McBride Lake it will count towards that achievement). The name "going places" or "the tourist" would sound nice!

Oh yes. Meeting Floppy has got to be on the list somewhere from Lost River Please. But here are a few other ideas...
1) Complete your first Hunt and Snack
2) Find all 25 dens in Slough Creek in 1 game
3) Achievement for coat colors of pups? Not sure where to go with this.
4) Get a 4 star potential mate
5) Get a 1 star potential mate
6) Reach rendezvous site with a litter of 7 and or all difficulty.
7) Catch a beaver
8) Scare off your first predator
9) Hunt all ungulates and calves available at least once. (Mule deer, Elk, Moose)
10) Find a fish that an eagle has dropped
11) Maintain 15 hexes of territory at all times throughout game-play in slough creek.
12) "Let Sleeping Wolves Lie" for Iron wolf player, first Iron Wolf character finished(or not dead by predators, any competition, or even hunger and had the end death message scene)

These are just a few suggestions.

Hope I'm doing this right.
  1. Flying Fish -- witness a bald eagle catching a fish.
  2. Finders, Keepers -- steal a golden eagle's, coyote's, or fox's dropped hare.
  3. Losers, Weepers -- steal a bald eagle's abandoned fish.
  4. It's Mine! All Mine! -- dominate # stranger wolf pack hexes.
  5. There’s No Scent Like Home, or Smells Like Home-- claim a total of 15 hexes. | "Free" Real Estate -- claim a total of 30 hexes.
  6. Spoiled for Choice -- find all den sites.
  7. Tale as Old as 2.7/Classic -- Witness the majestic Floppy in Lost River.
  8. Chewing On Antlers -- kill a bull elk and bull moose at least once.
  9. When My Back Was Turned -- lose a pup to one of each predator.
  10. Connoisseur -- kill each prey species at least once.
  11. Takeaway -- remove a chunk of meat / meat chunk from a valid carcass? :P
  12. Wishing You Were Here -- when your family initiates a howl at the den/rendezvous site while you’re away from home, howl back!
  13. Vigilant Parent -- see a threat before it triggers, and send your pups to safety.
  14. Deja Vu, or Circle Of Life -- start a new game as one of your adult pups.
  15. Old, Familiar Trail, or Veteran’s Pawprints — choose the Saddle Meadows, Bison Peak Cutoff, or Aspen Heights den, and rendezvous at the Douglas Fir Slopes site.

It's great to hear that achievements are coming soon(ish)! Achievements are what really gave 2.7 a lot of replay value, so I can't wait to see what they're like in WolfQuest AE! As much as I will miss the grindy achievements from 2.7 (like killing 100 elk), I do think that this is the best choice for the sake of not making the game too grindy for its own good. Maybe some achievements like those could still be included as a throwback to 2.7's achievements, just only for smaller animals that are easier to hunt, and players obviously wouldn't have to kill a ridiculous number of them like they did in 2.7. I think that would make it more fun to get those achievements and make it feel like less of a grind. Anyway, here are my achievement ideas! (Some are ones that I've already suggested before)

Actually, I don't have any ideas. I read the other player's suggestions and they're great! If I come up with ideas one day, I will edit this comment.

Keep safe and healthy!

Really love some of these suggestions, especially for things like noticing a predator before the "pups in danger" notification pops up. I always am so vigilant when the pups are out in Slough Creek playing and I often find myself catching cougars and coyotes hanging around. It's so gratifying to feel like you're really doing a good job of protecting the den.
Any time you're using skills that a real wolf would, it just boosts the immersion so much. Things like finding your way back to a kill you made a few days ago, or tracking a stranger wolf all the way across your entire territory and then following them to the edge of your territory to make sure that they're really leaving after scaring them off, or learning as each year goes by the best hunting spots for each season -- these things put you in the mindset of your character and feel a bit like "going above and beyond" what's necessary. It'd be cool to see some of these things rewarded, or even just acknowledged with an achievement. You really can just sleep over and over again, only hunting when you get to ~50% hunger, only remarking your hexes when they hit ~30%, and chasing off a predator every now and then during Slough Creek, but where's the fun in that? Finding immersive ways to spend your time is what gives the game a lot of it's charm, for me. What would a real wolf do, what would she value?
I think the age system has done a lot for improving the life of the game, giving players a reason to keep booting up a new Slough Creek save and doing it all over again. I always enjoy the way each game is a little different and unpredictable (sometimes you struggle to find food for days and days, for example, or your den floods and you have to make a long and harrowing journey to a new one), but I think achievements will really help with adding some more incentive to replay those sections, plus hopefully some more variables in the future that will add even more contrast between different runs. I've been thinking a lot recently about this and I can't wait to see the progress you make in this area. I'm really happy to hear that achievements are coming and that you're looking at less grindy ones, too.
Regards,
