I'd also like side-missions like the cattle ranch, and perhaps little "collectibles" like skulls and flowers to decorate your territory? I dunno how realistic it is, but I'm always getting distracted by customization features and stuff. They're my favorite!
Perhaps something similar to that first idea- you could have a random chance in your Raise Pups mission of one of the crosses flooding or somehow becoming inaccessible, therefore forcing you to choose the other.
What about multiple Rendevous sites? Would be nice to have something refreshing.

If collectibles became a thing I'd definitely love to see a section under Achievements where you can view your collection (perhaps even a 3D model of it).
Yeah! I like that idea very much! Dave what do you think of this?

I think the devs said that flooding would be tricky to incorporate,
loboLoco wrote:Will there be any flooding or bush fire?

We’ve been thinking about a fire, since they are not unusual in Yellowstone. There are some technical challenges but we hope to figure those out. Flooding is less common in Yellowstone and even trickier (at least to make it look good).

But, there could be some other obstruction to your densite's corresponding river crossing, like a group of fishing bears. They like to congregate at the best fishing locations, usually shallow water like a crossing, and fish alongside other bears. Bears will defend their feeding grounds violently, so you will have to find another place for your family to cross, lest you put them and yourself in danger.

Or a rare "spirit bear", that comes with achievements or something

Though the ethics of putting in a rare animal (with incentives to harass it no less) are questionable.. the poor guy would never be left alone by us, haha.

While researching wolf habituation, I thought of a neat side mission. Similar to the cattle ranch mission, players would find a portal which takes them to a small camping area. No humans would be around, but clever wolves who are brave enough may find some tasty snacks to scavenge and fill their bellies. Like the cattle ranch, they'd only have a short period of time before being caught and chased away. Perhaps to signal time is running out: the sound of campers returning, bear bells ringing and seeing flashlights or a lamp in the distance? If players don't run away in time, they'd be shot.
It would be an interesting side mission and also show the dangers of wolves becoming habituated. I don't believe there are campsites within the game map, so perhaps it would be more of a shoddy built tent and fire, someone camping where they shouldn't be?

That sounds fun, and there are traces of campfires throughout AM and SC. I would love to creep into a tent and gorge on human snacks. :D Maybe, in the tent, there could be a makeshift crib with a baby inside (who you can't see because he's wrapped in blankets) and your timer starts when the baby begins to cry.

maybe there could be when your pups are fully grown theyd help grow your other generation of pups and help defend and support the pack.
- i also like the idea being radio collared by a human. though i feel it should depend on your xp wether your a solo or in a pack.
- in shewolfs documentary they showed how her mate was lazy at first but as he got older became more responsible. so the idea of personalities is a great idea.
-pack fights or raids are also cool to make this simulation a bit more up ranked. so if your pack is small and cant defend your territory you'd either have to leave or fight to the death. itll depend on your journey your take as a wolf.
- im not really sure if wolf leaders accept or stranger wolves into their pack but if they do that would be a great idea, like they be named submissive or dispersed wolf that would like to join your pack.
- some animal herds not just staying in some spot, so i think itd be cool if theyd migrate around the whole map, so you could be lucky if some elk or bison come into your home. FREE FOOD. without having to leave your pups for food.
EDIT:
- i dont know about adding diseases in this game like mange on your wolf or pack. OR EVEN YOUR PUPS! i feel like it should be on a challenging lvl though.
those are just some ideas i got off from watching SheWolfs documentary :) :wolf:

Ambush attacks should be a thing.
Today I was eating some cow elk as my wolf Sarah, ant there was a predator music - when I looked back as Sarah, there was a grizzly bear standing right at her. Although I managed to chase him off(No pun intended), that was surprising and fun.

I'm really interested in that idea! But it might disturb younger players. How would you kill the baby?

A hidden human baby certainly would be a creative way to time the duration of one's campfire visit if such a mission was added to the game. However, showing or suggesting that your wolf character has eaten the baby is another matter entirely. WolfQuest tends to illustrate the issue of co-existence between wolves and humans through the environment (e.g., the sound of gunshots in the Cattle Ranch and the many easter eggs in all three game maps that narrate this existence, whether neutral or destructive) rather than through direct or visible wolf-to-human and human-to-wolf contact. Eating a human baby would not be an added feature, to say the least.

It would be cool if you had to find a bear's den and kill the cub before the mother bear comes. But, the mother bear could be out to kill your cubs too or even worse, kill you AND your cubs! There could be signs of the mom coming like distant roars. But, if the bear is after your pups there could be loud, distant whimper and crying from the pups, or a howl from your mate. This would be pretty fun and intense for wolf lovers, as well as a simulation of what happens in real life. (Since wolves and bears are known to kill each other's offspring)

Bears don't have dens except during hibernation and they have two Cubs on average, possibly killing the Cubs before the mother kills you would be interesting

Sounds great! I also liked Wolvencall's suggestion about option to try kill cubs.

roguemoon wrote:My first thought was something akin to boss battles. For example, in a certain section of the map there will be another predator or an extra strong prey animal. If you enter this area it will trigger the 'boss' to appear. Defeating it will earn you a load of EXP. I think something like a very large bear (perhaps based off Yellowstone's famous Scarface?) or a wise and experienced adult elk or moose- maybe with a fancy colouring like albino for extra pizzazz.

I love the scent collection idea also.
I like this a lot. I think WolfQuest would benefit from being more gamey. As Dave said in the first post, the quests in the game are linear and repetitive. Having more RPG-like features I think would liven it up, and give it amazing replay value.

Animal sims are my favourite type of game, but there is such a thing as being too realistic, to the point where the gameplay suffers. I guess you just have to remember that while the game may be about wolves, the players in the game are people.

However I wouldn’t say realism and being gamey are mutually exclusive. You could have every type of the mission listed in the first post (escort, rescue, escape, etc) and incorporate them into situations which could occur in a real wolf’s life. For example;

1. Rescue - rescue your mate from a sticky situation... maybe your mate goes out on a hunting trip and has a run-in with a cougar. Cougars are known to kill lone wolves.

2. Escort - find a lost pup before nightfall and escort him back to the den. On the way home, predators will look to cash in on an easy snack. It’s up to you to use your experience and skills to find the safest way back and guide your puppy.

3. Evade - pass through enemy territory without being detected by the enemy pack. Maybe one of the pack members is a potential mate who you can try to secretly court without being caught by the rest of the pack.

4. Escape - if you get caught, you have to escape the enemy territory or evade the pack until they give up. You can jump onto rocks, take refuge on a cliffside, maybe run into a bear and hope it’ll put them off you. It’s a chance to get creative. :)

And boss battles! The boss could be an extra big bear - a bear that dwarfs the new wolf model - or an even bigger moose, or a battle scarred bison. The opportunities for missions are endless! :)
