Ethiopian wolves discussion.

Post by Blizzard_Wolf » Tue Nov 20, 2012 4:47 pm

Ethiopian wolf. Ever head of them?
Other names:Abyssinian wolf
Fun facts:
1. Scientists thought they were foxes until later studies showed they was actually wolves.
2. They are far less aggressive then other dogs.
3. They live in packs except they hunt alone. They eat ground mole rats and other small animals because they live in a desert.
4. There is currently about 550 Ethiopian wolves living today.
5. Instead of just the alphas giving birth, anyone in the pack can. Omegas, Deltas, etc.
6. In 1990 there was a serious outbreak of rabies among the Ethiopian Wolves along Bale Mountain National Park. This scared many people and it is believed that over 400 wolves died from it or were killed due to being positive for it. The efforts of the Born Free Foundation stepped in to help by offering free rabies vaccinations for others so that the problem wouldn’t continue. This helped to reduce the number of cases reported since then drastically.

I hope someone else knows more about these animals, as I would like to learn more!

Unless you're willing to classify coyotes and golden jackals as wolves, then Ethiopian wolves are not wolves.

Look at this graph on canid genetics: http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v4 ... -f10.2.jpg

As you can see, the coyote and golden jackal are just behind the wolf (meaning they are closely related), while the Ethiopian wolf is between them and African wild dogs/dholes.

Actually, Ethiopian wolves are Wolves. They are just mistaken as Jackals,Foxes and Coyotes because of their physical appearance. http://www.wolfworlds.com/ethiopian-wolf.html Here's a link to some info on them that says that they are mistaken for Jackals, Foxes and coyotes.

I repeat, the Ethiopian wolf is not a wolf unless you're willing to count the coyote and golden jackals as wolves too. Once again, I link to the phylogeny graph: http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v4 ... -f10.2.jpg

As you can see, the coyote and golden jackal are closer to the grey wolf than the Ethiopian wolf is.

Also, what does the site mean by "jackal"? If it means black-backed and side-striped jackals, then the site is correct: the phylogeny graph does indeed show that the Ethiopian wolf is closer to the grey wolf than it is to the black-backed and side-striped jackal are. However, the golden jackal is shown to be more closely related to the grey wolf than the Ethiopian wolf is.

Perhaps you'd like to take a look at this discussion I started on wolves and jackals in the general discussion section: http://www.wolfquest.org/bb/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=69070

Ethiopian wolves are gray wolves that migrated because they was driven out. They evolved into what they are now

Your information is outdated, and debunked by the 2005 study from which the phylogeny graph comes from (have you looked at it?). Even if they were grey wolves, the genetics show that coyotes and golden jackals are too, in fact more so.

Some have mated with jackals and coyotes but they are clearly wolves

Answer me this; How are Ethiopian wolves wolves, but the coyote and golden jackal aren't?

Also, your last post confuses me. How can Ethiopian wolves mate with coyotes, when coyotes live in North America?

Sorry I didn't mean the coyote part. Jackals and coyotes are different. They aren't wolves. Ethiopians are wolves. Explain how they aren't wolves besides the genetics thing.

The "genetics thing" is actually crucial, but as you ask, I'll indulge you:

1. Coyotes and golden jackals have wolf-like pelt colours (grey, tawny, cinnamon, black etc.) Ethiopian wolves on the other hand are bright red. No true wolf has that colour.

2. Coyotes and golden jackals are opportunistic feeders who eat anything from mice to deer/gazelles, just like wolves. Ethiopian wolves on the other hand are specialised mole-rat eaters.

3. Coyotes and golden jackals can live in almost any habitat, be it desert, tundra, forests and even cities, just like wolves. Ethiopian wolves can only survive in highland/mountain areas.

4. Coyotes and golden jackals, like wolves, will leave their pack once they're old enough. In Ethiopian wolf packs, only the females leave.

Now I ask you to answer my own question: How are golden jackals and coyotes not wolves, while Ethiopian wolves are? As I see it, the only thing they have in common with the grey wolf is being part of the Canis genus, and that they just so happen to have "wolf" in their names (which is a mistake anyway).

Ethiopian wolves are evolved. They changed due to their climates. As I have said before, they are mistaken for foxes and jackals.

All animals are evolved, and you have not answered my question: how are Ethiopian wolves wolves, and coyotes/golden jackals not? Read through my list, then tell me.

The idea that Ethiopian wolves are wolves actually comes from a study in 1994. Since then (2005 to be exact), further genetic studies have proven that it is not so. Why is that so difficult to accept?

Please read this whole thing before you argue what I have said as this proves my point.

They are wolves because I have watched many Tv shows on these animals very recently and it said they was wolves. Ethiopian wolves are wolves, They evolved after they migrated. They have mated with jackals and domestic dogs, and that is a reason why people mistake them. Here's an exact sentence from wikipedia that states they are wolves.
Initial molecular evidence suggested that the Ethiopian wolf is a descendant of the gray wolf. More recent evidence suggests that this is not the case; although the Ethiopian wolf is closely related to other wolves.
They are wolves. They just resemble the coyote and jackal. Just because they have different ways, that doesn't make them not wolves. For instance just because a terrier has a different shape and size and coat color and different health risks from a Labrador Retriever doesn't make the terrier not a dog.
There is a subspecies of this wolf that the coat is redder, but most Ethiopian wolves do not have bright red coats. The have red coats just but it also has some brown/tan in it as shown in this photo: http://www.predatorconservation.com/ima ... nwolf2.jpg
