Ahhh, the maned wolf. Such a stunning intelligent creature. Not a candid I'm too familiar with but from what I know, they show alot of potential. ^^

I actually do want to know a bit more on them. I was looking at some pictures the other day, and it looked liked some had long fur, while others had short fur like foxes. Is this just a common variable in their coats, or is it due to location?

Well, the more research I do, it appears the maned wolf has golden red fur with black long legs and a black "mane". It appears that they all have the same length of fur but I imagine the photos you saw were of different seasons. Like any other candid, their fur most likely becomes longer and thicker in the winter while in the summer it may become slightly shorter.

Mhh, thank you for clearing that up. I guess that does make sense. I think I'm going to read up on them if I can, since they are such interesting creatures.

No problem. ^^
I think I find maned wolves very interesting because of their odd characteristics. I think my favorite is the mane as well as their long legs, allowing them to see over the tall Savannah grasslands.
Here's a little something I found on them:
The maned mane wolf's physical appearance---its scruffy, golden-red fur, its long, black legs, and its black bib/ mane---gives it the nickname "red fox on stilts". Despite its resemblance to a fox, and despite its name "maned wolf", this animal is neither a true wolf, nor a true fox. In fact, the maned wolf is the only member of the Chrysocyon genus, in the entire Canidae family of species.

Along with the maned wolf's odd taxonomy and physiology,it has a reputation for emitting a pungent odor, and gives rise to yet another (less complimentary) nickname,"the skunk wolf".

I already saw a Maned Wolf. They are big and tall, their legs are very long and they really look like fox! But you would never confuse them. They aren't like wolves, for what I know they bark more than howl. They are so cute and beautiful! <3

I've never even heard of a Maned Wolf let alone see pictures, so thanks for this topic. Learning something new everyday. I think they look kind of neat although they resemble that of a fox more than a wolf. And they don't seem very big...

I've actually heard that the left eye of a maned wolf, in folklore, is said to bring good luck. I believe it was in the Encyclopedia of Mammals, but I can't be sure. I'll try to check if it was a maned wolf.

Anyways, I love these lanky creatures and their frugivorous ways. I hope they all get to keep their eyeballs!

I have heard of maned wolves and I love them! I saw one at a zoo once, but couldn't get a good picture... :(
I did a report on them for my biology class somewhat recently, and I drew the attached picture (doing my best to copy a photo) for it. :)

  • I went to the nature center in Ashville, NC, about a month ago, and they had three [or four? don't remember] maned wolves. I honestly thought they were kinda creepy looking; their legs look like stilts, and their muzzles are so tapered, it looks like they're about to snarl at you lol. They were pretty, though, and we heard them yipping and yowling and things when we were walking away. It was a nice experience.
