That is an interesting piece of information. Thank you for sharing it with us, Pawnee!

As for sheeba I want to give one tip: do NOT step into the woods/forest while being alone or with less then 4 people. I reconise the danger that you and your friends were in. if you both were found by a coywolf pack, I am not sure if they would have attacked you or not. I am afraid they could have seen you as prey. luckly, (you saw) there was only one coywolf/coyote.

Yes, I am fully aware of the dangers with coywolves around here. We were all very lucky indeed. Although it's hard not to go through the woods around where I live. There are many trails in the woods that people frequently use, and I know that most won't give up the easy way of getting to someplace. My entire backyard is the woods; we've seen coywolves around our front yard before. It's near impossible to avoid them. But everyone here takes caution, regardless.

This was very interesting, thanks for posting it.

Its bad enough we have coyotes where I live, I can only think of whatcould happen if we had coywolves.

Whoaaa, this is bizarre. My professor told me that wolves and coyotes can't interbreed...I'll have to bring this to her attention! :D It kind of sounds like the new hybrid is stepping up to fill in the vacant niche left by wolves. Weirdness. I have never heard of anything like this.

This is the first I have heard of a coywolf. I find it a bit odd that a wolf would mate with a coyote but anything can happen. I just can't get over how much bigger a wolf is than a coyote and how big the pups must be compaired to their mother (given the mother is the coyote). That can be dangerous for the mother if the pups are much larger than a normal coyote pup.

I almost spit at my computer thinking about how "coywolf" isn't a word. Humph.
We have coyotes around where I live, and they're decently sized. We have horses so they usually stay away, but our dogs wouldn't know better. In fact, my little corgi had a face off with one long ago. Unfortunately, the population has died down here.

Horses would be too big for a coyote or a coyote pack to take down. But a corgi sounds more like lunch to a hungry animal...its the small dogs that get taken off the leash...

never the less, while you should avoid habituating wildlife and be cautious, the odds of being attacked by a wild animal are lot slimmer than say, falling off a ladder or getting in a car crash.

I have never heard of a Coywolf before. A mix between a wolf and coyote? Well we have both coyotes and wolves where I live so we must be extra careful. I also, wouldn't be to suprized on the matter of a Coyote and Wolf mix considering they are of the same animal family.

This could be evolution in the making. Similar occurences have been happening all around the world. Need I remind anyone of the Polar/ Grizzly bear hybrid found in Canada?

The coyotes, or more so coywolves, here in Newfoundland have been seen in packs many times before. My grandfathers friend has seen a pack of 6 on the highway once, and they have been known to attack, and even kill Moose. But their biggest prey would be Caribou and fox which is partly the reason why the Caribou, and even the foxes are disappearing from the island. It's frightening to know that packs of these big animals are traveling around all the time, especially where I live is all wooded area.
