Most irritating animal misconceptions

Post by La Striata » Tue May 12, 2015 1:02 am

Feel free to contribute!

- Hyenas are part of the dog family.

- Modern big cats are descendants of sabre-toothed cats.

- Crocodiles are more closely related to lizards than they are to birds.

- Lipleurodon, Mosasaurus and Plesiosaurus (basically all prehistoric marine reptiles) were dinosaurs.

- Dogs evolved from wolves-they share a common ancestor.

- Predators like cats and dogs can live off an all vegan diet

- Animals that have been kept in captivity are inherently tame

- Spotted hyenas are low-life scavengers that don't hunt any of their meals

Gotta stick up for hyenas so often. ):

That's news to me as a misconception... :?

- Ethiopian wolves, apart from domestic dogs, are the closest relatives of grey wolves.

- Chimps are genetically closer to gorillas than to humans.

- Komodo dragons are descendants of dinosaurs.

- The term "fish" is scientifically valid.

If dogs evolved from wolves, there wouldn't be any wolves left, I think. Both species diverged from one another, so they both would have evolved over the time they were apart. I'll try to find a source for the matter, but I recall reading somewhere that they didn't evolve from wolves.

- wild predatory animals (in general) will attack a human unprovoked.
- wild prey animals are inherently docile

That assumes that all wolves evolved into dogs... Domestic cats evolved from African wildcats, and domestic rabbits from European wild rabbits, yet these wild species still exist...

- Grey foxes are foxes.

- South American foxes are foxes.

- The Falklands Island wolf was a wolf.

- Raccoon dogs are not foxes... Yeah, "fox" and "wolf" taxonomy is such fun!

- Carnivorous dinosaurs couldn't swim.

- Mastodon is just another word for mammoth.

- Pterosaurs were the ancestors of birds.

- Pterosaurs were just flying dinosaurs.

Went into a travel agent's today, and saw a poster advertising a discount on trips to South Africa... with a photo of a tiger.

My goodness... that's practically a crime
*face-palm*

-Male lions are are always around their pride and are exceptionally caring to all it's members
-Solitary and feral predators (especially cats) can band together and form friendly connections with each other, even for no apparent survival benefit

Hmm...that dogs selectively bred to do a certain task do not get any enjoyment out of doing that task, and are forced.

Oh, sorry about that. I'll keep it in mind.

- The moa was the biggest bird species driven to extinction in historical times by man (it actually was the elephant bird of Madagascar).

- The dodo was driven to extinction due to people eating them.

That wolves are blood-thirsty killers that have you and your livestock at the top of their menu. (Along with other assumptions that the world's predators are out to get us when, in reality, they probably want to stay away from us)
