Endangered, Rare Species of Shark Found

Post by sSilvers » Tue May 22, 2012 5:58 am

The Glyphis (or "speartooth shark") was found in Northern Austrailia.
In northern Australia, a group of rare freshwater sharks stalk their prey through tropical rivers, including the speartooth shark Glyphis glyphis.

Many of the new fish identified during a recent shark-and-ray cataloging project grow slowly, putting them at greater risk of extinction, said Clive Roberts, curator of fishes at the Museum of New Zealand.

''They're long-lived and relatively slow reproducers, only dropping pups perhaps every second year,'' Roberts said.

''Because they are vulnerable to fishing, they become locally extinct fairly quickly.''

Huh, that's pretty cool! I didn't know more freshwater sharks existed; only heard of the bullshark to this point. It's sad to read they go extinct so easily...

Ah yes. The estimated population of Glyphis in the world is 250.
Haha, the bullshark is all around.

That's interesting. It would be cool to see sharks like that in other places. Thanks for sharing! :)
