Alleged Woolly Mammoth Caught on Tape, Real or Hoax?

Post by Mr Wolf25 » Sat Feb 11, 2012 10:30 pm

I found it out earlier today and I want to share it here, judge the evidence, is it a real mammoth or is it a Hoax?
Blurry footage of what looks quite a bit like a woolly mammoth crossing a body of water in Siberia has caused a stir amongst viewers across the web, many of whom either insist it’s hoax or think it’s another non-extinct animal.
The extraordinary clip, which was allegedly taped last summer by government-employed engineer Michael Cohen, surfaced on the website of UK tabloid The Sun on Thursday and caused a major commotion. The video has lead some viewers to believe the creature that has been thought to be extinct for over 4000 years still exists in the icy Chukotka Autonomous Okrug region of Siberia.
Cohen shot the footage while he was in the area surveying the remote land for a planned road, The Sun reported. The hair matches samples recovered from mammoth remains that have been discovered in Russia, the paper added.
Viewers, however, are quite skeptical of the footage. While many feel that it’s a digitally altered video, others think it’s simply an elephant, or perhaps a bear with a fish in its mouth that is slowly working its way across the icy waters.
It has also been noted that Cohen is something of a paranormal enthusiast, and has been tied to clips of alleged UFOs and strange phenomena.

Clearly a hoax.

First off, you need to ask yourself, why the video quality is so horrible? Even most phones have HD video recorders now, considering this was supposedly filmed last summer it should be much better quality.
The only reason that would even make sense if is the video was edited.

Even if the video was real, why would a creature of the family Elephantidae (which includes mammoths and elephants) hold it's truck towards the water? As seen in the video, the "mammoth" is crossing a river with it's "truck" limp as can be, as some points it even appears to be underwater. Elephants in water will normally carry their truck curled to avoid getting it submerged at any point, which our little mammoth friend is clearly not doing.
If you want to see what I mean, look at this image: http://img515.imageshack.us/img515/9058 ... ephant.png

Another thing to question is the animal's behavior. If a wolly mammoth rarely saw humans, why would it casually stroll across a river with a strange (possibly predatory) creature standing on the river bank?

Yet another reason why the video can't be real is there is no evidence of any type of tusk near the face of the animal. Mammoths of both genders had very long, prominent, curved tusks. This is, again, another characteristic not seen in the video.

I agree with Croix, it is definitely a hoax. At first I was wondering what it was, but now that I've seen the footage a couple times, it looks like a bear holding a large fish.
One thing I'm wondering is that, if what they say about mammoths is true, where is the rest of its herd? Unless it was a male, it shouldn't be alone. Plus the tusks aren't even shown, as Croix stated, and I also find it odd that the "trunk" was basically underwater.
I definitely think this is a hoax, though you never really know unless you were there. x3
Interesting find though Mr. Wolf, thanks for sharing!

Hoax. Looks more like a bear with a fish or something hanging from its mouth. Croix and Alpha Female have supported this decision with facts too. Nice try, people who may have wanted to gain attention by saying that they found a wooly mammoth!

Hoax.
Considering the size of the creature, even if it was a mammoth which I highly doubt it is. The size would suggest it was a calf, also suggesting there is a mother and father to create the calf in the first place. Mammoths are also well known for having exceedingly large ears, which the creature in that video clearly doesn't have. Thanks for sharing!

I also agree with everyone else. The "mammoth" is the size of an elephant, and shows no clear image of any large tusks which make the mammoth easy to identify.

I'm going to come right out and say, that I see this creature as a bear as well.

Something about the ears and muzzle though...neither is as defined as I feel it should be...
That's just my curiosity talking.

I think that if that was a real mammoth, because this video was filmed over a year ago, we would have found more. Mammoths traveled in herds.

When the guy zoomed in, bad idea. The color shift between the head and "trunk" is so obvious, I had to face palm. It looks like he's carrying a big stick, although it must have been heavy, and he would have likely been tugging it behind him unless he was really big and strong. Especially when dragging it through water.
Don't you think?

It also would have been a pretty small mammoth...

Hm. See what happens when I watch these videos? I went easy on you guys, but writing this, was a mind numbing process.
