Animals: What's His/Her Name?

Post by Black Velvet » Mon Jan 23, 2012 8:47 pm

Out in the animal kingdom, animals go by different names or titles based on whether they are male or female. Some animals share the same name titles, such as cow, hen, buck, bull, etc., while others are unique. Some are odd and not well know, while others are quite common.
Here are a few examples of animals and the names they are given based on genders. I found some of these on the internet or in books.

A boy cat is called a Tom. A girl cat is called a Queen.

A boy ferret is called a Hob. A girl ferret is called a Jill

A boy donkey is called a Jack. A girl donkey is called a Jenny.

A boy bear is called a Boar. A girl bear is called a Sow or an Ursa.

A boy rabbit is called a Buck. A girl rabbit is called a Doe.

A boy deer is called a Buck, Hart, or Stag. A girl deer is called a Doe, Hind, Roe, or Tig.

Can you name any others? Do you know of any odd or uncommon animal gender names or titles? You can probably find some answers online or in an encyclopidia. Some animals may have more than one.

Eeeang. Thats my buzzer sound.

The words 'Brute' and 'Fae' are not specific to male and female, or even wolves for that matter. They are simply descriptive words used by some ignorant animal role-players when they run out of words to describe thier character's gender, and are actually not gender-specific at all. A female can be a brute/described as being brutish, and a male can be feminine. 'Fae' actually isn't even a real word! Yes, that means all those pack central ranks and role-plays where you saw them used like this are incorrect.

I honsetly don't know what the actual gender words are for wolves (I don't think there are any), but the dog words are 'sunshine' for female and 'dog' for male. A female horse is the mare, and the male is the stallion.

As for Queens and Toms, thats OK. You could add that a female cat is also called a Molly. Other than that, the rest look fine Black Velvet :) .

EDIT: After some more thought, you could put 'she-wolf' for female and 'wolf' for male. Those are correct. The other word for female dog/wolf/most large-to-medium sized canids is filtered on the forums.

Some of these I'm not sure, but if I remember correctly:
Female Fox is called a vixen | male fox is called a tod
Female goose is called a goose | male goose is called a gander
Female dolphin is called a cow |male dolphin is called a bull
Female lion is called a lioness | male lion is called a lion
Female horse is called a mare |male horse is called a stallion
Female tiger is called tigress |male tiger is called a tiger

I'm noticing cow and bull were probably the most common in animal species as well as Jill and Jack, and sow and boar.
