Radio Active Animals!
There have been massive increases in large carnivores in the nuclear wasteland around Chernobyl creating a complete ecosystem and one of Europe’s largest wildlife sanctuaries – and yet it’s radioactive. Where humans can’t live, nature is rebounding and somewhere in this vast nuclear wilderness, there are packs of radioactive wolves, living in an archaic structure that has vanished from other parts of Europe. Here they can thrive, here they can live like real wolves in large packs as they used to. Before 1986, the zone was heavily farmed and populated, and wolves were scarce. In less than 25 years there are an estimated 300+ wolves making the most of this deceptively beautiful landscape.
Wow, I just wonder and think about this. It's mostly very dangerous to be around a Nuclear Wasteland, I wonder how animals can survive in this place!
What are your thoughts?

Re: Radio Active Wolves!
i think tat they created some type of resistense of radiation, that's the only possible explanation.

Re: Radio Active Wolves!
The wildlife population around Chernobyl and Pripyat has surged because of the absence of humans. Yes, there is still lots of radiation in the area, however some humans (under 500 people) currently reside within the zone of exclusion. It's possible to survive there as a human, but the levels of radiation while non-lethal over a shorter period of time can lead to serious health concerns such as cancer or be the cause of death over a longer period of time. Repopulation is out of the question because of this, and the area will remain contaminated by radiation for many years.
The animals left in the area have probably gained some form of resistance against radiation, and wolves can thrive because animals like wild boar and deer (which they can hunt and eat) are also present. It's very interesting how animals can adapt to a wide range of environments- even ones caused by tragic human disasters.

I saw a video of this in science class, we had to watch it. I found it very interesting, its amazing how they adapted, while we still can't live there.

It appears to me that the reason that these wolves and other species are able to survive in this area without being harmed is because as Larkal pointed out, the radiation becomes lethal to humans after a long period of time. Wolves ,however, do not live nearly as long as humans ,therefore, they are not able to develop any reaction whatsoever to this radiation. This is only a mere hypothosis. I do not know for certain the reason that wolves are able to adapt to these conditions that we cannot.

But then, wont the animals spread the radioactive stuff to other animals and so on. It could infect a lot of animals.

Re: Radio Active Animals!
This is really interesting. A lot of people say that c ockroaches are resistant to nuclear activity but a lot of people don't know that a huge amount of animals actually are. This probably is a bit irrelevant but 10 years after Chernobyl people found high levels of radiation in cow milk in Minnesota. People guess that planes flying over Chernobyl probably transported the radiation over and it landed on grass, which the cows ate.
