Hyenas are pretty neat. I find it interesting how the female holds the dominant rank over the males. That's rare in most animals and I find it pretty interesting and unique.

I merged the older thread with this one, because of all of the information still on it. :wink:

Then you should have put it after hyena then as they are closely related to cats. :mrgreen:

Also notable is the matriarchal nature of the clans, with females almost always outranking males. As well as that, the long forelegs as opposed to long hind legs unlike most apex predators, giving them their distinct gait. Hyenas: breaking all the rules!

Yes, I did.

I've always wondered about hyenas, for some reason. I like their laugh.

Hyenas are ok, I'm pretty much indifferent about them. But what I really hate is when people get hyenas and African Wild Dogs mixed up. I don't even know why people seem to get them mixed up, they look nothing alike. But hyenas threaten African Wild Dogs and when I wrote my African Wild Dog story, since i was taking on their point of view, I put hyenas as the "evil" influence as well. But then again I made humans and lions evil too so it's not actually because I hold anything against hyenas. I am indifferent about hyenas because I don't find them all that attractive looking, but they aren't ugly either, and I am amazed by their strength but there are lots of other animals I like better.

Also I just recently watched a video where a hyena found a dead elephant and because it's teeth couldn't get through the elephant's tough hide, it stuck it's head in the elephant's butt hole and started tearing things out and eating it that way....it was actually quite disgusting.

Crocuta Crocuta~
Hyenas of all kinds are just great! From the famous Spotted to the termite-eating Aardwolf.
I've got quite a few hyena characters myself and, Ah!, They're just so much fun. c:
How many of you know they have unique slit pupils?
Is it at all possible to turn on coding other than BBcode for the signatures?
I made an image specifically for this...

I love hyenas, especially the spotted variety. :> I just love their strange anatomy, and absolutely adore the sounds made by spotted hyenas. ;;

I love hyenas too. They're very interesting animals, and one of the things I think is awesome about them is their social intelligence. It's on-par and even better than chimpanzees!!

I like hyenas, especially the spotted ones. I think it's interesting that the female has the dominant rank over the males.

I think hyenas are creepy. Their sounds makes me nervous. Besides the fact they are almost never alone, so when you hear a hyena sound it kinda means death, if you are in the wild :shock:
