Nice picture though, and the water reflection one above it is gorgeous.

Re: Photography by Kivia
I like owls a lot.
lol, but actually the best way to hold the owls was on the legs right up under the body so you wouldn't get bit/stabbed by talons. This is just an unfortunate angle. Dx
Thank you though, also for the photo prior to this one!

Jokes aside, that's a great pic hahah.

Re: Photography by Kivia
Haven't taken many photos lately because my life revolves around work, but I did just buy myself a new camera (Nikon Coolpix P900). One of my first photos so far is a freehand pic of the moon to test out the zoom capabilities. May be going out to my local wildlife refuge in the coming days to test it further.

Oh wow, that might as well have been a stock photo. That's really cool, and definitely promising for more of your photography to come... :)

That moon shot is fantastic! Do share any new photos with us, I particularly love that owl.

I'm back with a new friend: a juvenile Eastern Screech-Owl from an educational falconry session I attended. He's going to be used as an education bird.

He looks slightly perturbed at the prospect Kivia !
What a nice quality image. I am really falling behind in the camera tech world. My little Samsung Core LTE phone takes potato pictures! But this was probably taken by an actual photography camera ?

um, the way you were holding it is a good way for it to foot itself in the face if it started thrashing. Barn owls have such long legs that its best to hold them right below the ankle, that way you have control of the entire leg. i've had a barn foot the heck out of my arm by holding it that way, too.Kivia wrote:lol, but actually the best way to hold the owls was on the legs right up under the body so you wouldn't get bit/stabbed by talons. anyway, I absolutely adore that lil screech owl juvenile. baby screech owls are the cutest thing in the world.

That's how I was taught to hold them, unless the banders have been doing it wrong. Never had any problems these last two years- only time I brought a thumb/fingers near or below the ankle was to prep the leg for banding. Otherwise they stayed pretty upright and still when I had a good grip on the thighs. But I know you're very knowledgeable on handling birds of prey so I can ask the banders next time about it! Safety of the bird is vital.falconxr wrote:um, the way you were holding it is a good way for it to foot itself in the face if it started thrashing. Nikon Coolpix P900, which is honestly a glorified point and shoot but it looks and behaves like a DSLR. It just doesn't have interchangeable lenses- it does everything I'd want a DSLR to do though! Definitely worth the investment. My phone is starting to fail on me camera-wise too, so I've been trying to use my big ol' Nikon more.DaniBeez wrote:He looks slightly perturbed at the prospect Kivia !

Thanks guys- he really was a sweetheart. I've been banding passerines lately so I may have to share some of those photos too.

Re: Photography by Kivia
that's how we handle barn owls for medical exams and general grabbing. But maybe banding is different? Idk, the one time i held a barn like that i got told to hold it further down the leg.

Some of my school friends do outreach with birds, and they all take pretty pictures of them. The two hobbies must go hand in hand!
