Suggestions for future photography themes

If you read the rules thread (which you really should have read), you might have noticed that I mentioned themes may be making a comeback. Of course, this will depend on activity and interest, which is why if they do make a comeback, it will most likely be after version 2.7 is released. However... they won't be exactly the same as they were in the past. This time, they'll have a bit of a twist (think: relaxed mini-contests). But we'll get to the details of the new themes once the time comes, and the first one is posted. For now...

...we need suggestions!

Let us know on this topic what you would like to see as a future theme. The old themes may be repeated - if they're what you want to see again, we're not going to deny you that, as long as you submit new/different photos!

Used themes:
April 2012 Theme: Backyard Birds
May 2012 Theme: Flowers
June 2012 Theme: Sunrises & Sunsets
July 2012 Theme: Water Landscapes
August 2012 Theme: National/Natural Monuments
September 2012 Theme: Marine or Seaside Wildlife - this one can definitely be repeated right away
October 2012 Theme: Fall Foliage
November 2012 Theme: Forests
--
February 2016 Theme: Canines

Suggested themes:
Give us a list! We want what you want, and you're only going to have a chance at getting what you want if you let us know what that is.
  • • Forest Dwellers
    • Marine Wildlife
    • Birds [In general, not as strict as the 'back yard']
    • Sunrises and Sunsets
    • Small Wildlife
    • Water Landscapes
    • Weather (e.g. rain, sunshine, snow, etc.).
    • Seasons (spring, summer, fall and winter).
    • Countryside.
    • Mountains
    • Close-up
    • Black & White
    • Particular camera angle

I have a couple suggestions that may be similar to some above and I agree with the marine wildlife.
  • • Forest Dwellers
    • Marine Wildlife
    • Birds [In general, not as strict as the 'back yard']
    • Canines [Any kind of Canine in the same competition to broaden the topic]
That's about all I have for now. I may add more soon!

Also, replaying the sunrise and sunset would be nice.

It's been so long that I do think there's no harm in repeating some of the past themes. I personally am no photographer but definitely see the appeal in themes like flowers and forests.

For a new theme, maybe bugs/insects/arachnids? Could be broadened to 'Small Wildlife' to include tiny birds, critters, and lizards.

EDIT- By the way, perhaps this isn't relevant quite yet but I just took a look at the older topics and it might be worth putting a limit on the dimensions of the images. A lot of the older photos were pretty huge; receiving scaled down images and having all photos be more or less the same size might make the topics look cleaner and load faster.

That sounds like an excellent idea, Anduril
I am personally happy that the competitions are coming back as well as being able to post your own topics.

We could also repeat Water Lanscapes seen as this had some beautiful entries and may get some more people interested?

I mentioned resizing photos in the rules thread, but I didn't include a limit because I had no idea what to put. My laptop's got a bigger screen and resolution than most so I decided that I couldn't really use mine as a reference point for what looks good on this forum. Do you have a suggestion for the max size so I could include that?

Maybe a width of 640px at the maximum? I'm using the recommended website size.

Ah, I overlooked that, sorry!

I personally work on a 1600x1900 screen resolution and 800x600 photos (like your kookaburra one!) look really neat on that. I'm not entirely sure if 1024x786 is still a commonly used resolution, but when I switch my monitor to that, 650 x 450 seems to be the most efficient.. Some automatic resizing seems to happen, but I'm not sure if that's a browser-related thing.

Perhaps there could be a recommended size of up to 800x800 and a maximum size of not exceeding 1000 pixels in either width or height (like some of the photos in the Flowers thread do). That's still pretty generous, and if users still would prefer to show off a larger sized photo because of the quality or whatnot, they could always provide an external link to the full-sized image along with their rescaled version.

I think I've edited this like four times now but I'm having a terrible time wording myself properly

Ah I like the sound of a recommended size and then a maximum. And yeah, I always resize my photos to 800x600 before putting them online since that's what I prefer. So a recommended max width of up to 800 and then an absolute/enforced max width of 1000? (I'm thinking just saying width is okay since that matters a lot more than height?)

Yeah, pretty much what I was thinking, if everyone else is cool with that :)

Yeah, that seems to work. Even on mobile and tablet...

This forum needs some more love!

Anyway, here are a few suggestions for themes that I thought of that could potentially be used;

  • Weather (e.g. rain, sunshine, snow, etc.).
  • Seasons (spring, summer, fall and winter. I see 'fall foliage' has already been done, although I would like to see this one repeated!).
  • Countryside.
  • Mountains.
