(new) Rules for Nature & Wildlife Photography

Post by Sambhur » Mon Jul 06, 2015 9:37 pm

Note: The previous rules topic for this subforum has been removed. There were a lot of changes to be made, so a new topic was the best idea.

What's changed:

In the beginning, this area of the forum was devoted to monthly themes that users could submit to. User interest then resulted in a change to the rules, allowing users to have their own topic to post photos without the constraint of the themes. However, the e-mail submission system (similar to UA) was still in place. Now that users with permission are able to use [img] tags here, they are being allowed to take control of their own topics and post photos without jumping through e-mail submission-related metaphorical hoops! (also, we may see themes making a comeback in the near future!) Of course, there are still rules that must be followed...

Current Rules for Nature & Wildlife Photography
  • Photos that appeared in any of the past themed events may not be posted to personal topics.
They're already in the theme threads, let's see something new!
    .
  • One topic per user!
Each user will get one topic for all their photos. This is different from User Artwork, where each submission gets its own topic. Note the difference!
    .
  • Only post photos taken by you and no one else.
If we discover that you submitted a photograph that was not your own, you may be warned, or, in repeat cases, permanently banned from WolfQuest.
    .
  • Each person may post up to seven photographs per week max.
We want to see your best works! (also no one likes super cluttered topics) Give people a chance to comment on your newest post!
    .
  • Resize your photos so that they don't stretch the page.
Recommended max width of up to 800 pixels, with absolute max width of 1000 pixels - anything over this will be removed. Photos are generally huge in file size, resize them so that they look good in your thread and don't take too much time to load. We're trusting you to be reasonable with this.
    .
  • Photos can be cropped, resized, brightened, and sharpened, but should not otherwise be changed/manipulated.
However, adding your own watermark to your photos is of course, fine! MS Paint is great for quick photo crops and resizes.
    .
  • Photos should only include wild animals and/or natural habitats/scenery.
However, photos of wild animal species in captive environments such as reserves, zoos, or laboratory specimens are also acceptable. No pets or excess gore please!
    .
  • Spread your photos out throughout your thread - don't put them all in your first post.
Instead of a mega-long first post, spread your posts out (think: User Writings style) and give people the opportunity to easily comment on your newest photos. However, if you wish, you may link to your other photo posts within your thread, in your first post.

Important Note from WolfQuest: Photography is fun, but we also want to take a moment to emphasise that you should always practice good photography safety techniques. Always keep a safe distance from all wild animals. Never approach a dangerous animal or explore a dangerous area simply to take a photo. Follow all laboratory protocols when in a science lab setting. Safety first, and respect all life forms, alive or dead!

Here's a topic that includes tips for what programs to edit images with, and where to upload them

Go here if you wish to request permission to use [img] tags Remember - "If the privilege is abused, the user will be removed from the group immediately, and an official warning or temporary ban may follow suit, depending upon the severity of the situation."

Thanks for participating!
Feel free to respond with questions or comments.

Yep, you're welcome to do that if you wish! Since it's about your photos, it's relevant.

I am in the Image Tags usergroup and this forums says IMG codes are allowed, but when I try and post my images it says 'Invalid BB Code you cannot use [img].'
Along the side it also says IMG off
What shall I do about this?

It shows "on" for me. Switch your default usergroup to "Celebrating"... see if that does anything. You're apart of the Image Tags usergroup so I'm unsure why it's a problem for you.

Not sure if this particular board allows img codes, but it doesn't work here for me, either. Just thought I'd let you know.

Good to know. I'll let Neam know and see if she can double-check that IMG is enabled for Inage Tag users in this forum.

Yeah, same thing happens to me as Keytone, it says off. It may only work for certain people, I'm not sure.

Thanks for looking into it, Koa!

Looked into it and you should now be able to post image tags now. I thought it had been enabled, but apparently it got overlooked. ^^; Sorry about that!
Nothing interesting happens.

I have another question:
Is double posting allowed by the author? As in if they have said thank you for the critique or something and then want to add some more photos?

Yep, double posting is fine if you're going to be adding more photos! My intention was to have this inspired by User Writings in that sense. (:
