Predators for Six Month Pups

Post by duskypack » Tue Oct 21, 2014 4:30 pm

Hey Wolfquesters!

As I'm revising my book Return to California I had my pups run from a variety of things, such as an eagle, when they were six months. Are six month wolf pups still bothered by predators,or in any real danger?

Thanks in advance, this will help my realism in wolf writing!

Night is now falling, so ends this day.
The road is now calling, and I must away.
Over hill and under tree, through lands where never light has shone.
By silver streams that run down to the sea.

  • Hey DuskyPack,

On the International Wolf Centre's website, they have a page dedicated to pup development (http://www.wolf.org/learn/basic-wolf-in ... velopment/). Here is a quote from the section 4-6 months:
    - Milk teeth replaced
    - Winter fur becomes apparent and pup appearance is nearly indistinguishable from adults
    - Pups begin to accompany adults on hunts
Based on these brief points, it's safe to assume that 6-month old wolves are facing a transition point in their development, where the dangers are similar to what their older pack members are facing. Probably the biggest threat they face during this period is inexperience, since they are only just starting to tag along with the adult routines of hunting and travelling. Perhaps they get too close to a prey animal during a hunt and get gravely injured, or struggle in difficult terrain. Perhaps they are too curious about a mother bear, who won't hesitate to defend her cubs from potential danger. As for eagles, I read on the Golden Eagle Wikipedia page that eagles are capable of targeting adult wolves of a smaller-sized strain, so it is possible for a six-month old wolf to be targeted if it makes itself vulnerable to an attack.

    I hope this helps!
