Wolves in Winter

Post by duskypack » Wed Dec 26, 2012 5:53 pm

What do wolves do in winter in a pack consisting of parents, four pups, and a un-related wolf? I'm asking this for my story.

Night is now falling, so ends this day.
The road is now calling, and I must away.
Over hill and under tree, through lands where never light has shone.
By silver streams that run down to the sea.

Winter is generally the breeding time for wolves, but the exact time depends upon the geographical location; regardless, the breeding pair will be aggressive towards those who might pose competition as hormones will be running high. Their actions towards the unrelated animal will (a depend upon its gender (b its age (c its health, etc., and may also depend upon the age of the pups/if they are close to s.exual maturity or not, and so forth.

Elk are typically at their weakest point during the winter months, and thus wolves may have an easier time in regards to finding "easier" prey to target, but that does not guarantee their success. However, wolves also do not always go for the weakest animal and are known to participate in surplus killing.

Otherwise, they will be continuing normally with their wolf lives in the winter.

One more thing: In winter do wolves have a den or are they nomadic all winter?

Wolves only use the den when the pups are young and being raised; adult wolves will not use the den unless the adult wolf is (a female and (b expecting or raising pups as aforementioned. By the time winter arrives, the pups are a few months old and will not need to use a/any den(s).

Gray wolves will have a territory but that doesn't mean they'll necessarily sleep in one place within that territory.
