Night cam captures wolf hunting freshwater fish

Post by Koa » Thu Dec 13, 2018 11:39 am

A wolf snags freshwater fish from a creek in Voyageurs National Park.

For those wondering if the animal is a coyote:
We are 100% positive that this is a wolf. Wolves in northern Minnesota/Voyageurs are on average 60-70 lbs which is much smaller than wolves in other areas like northern Canada. Several of this wolf's collared pack members were in the vicinity of this wolf when we got this footage. Additionally, we got some footage that we did not include in this compilation where this wolf was on camera only minutes before other pack members walked by the camera. This is very likely a juvenile wolf in this pack.

Cool!

I can totally see why people would think this is a coyote. The context/additional information about the footage helps!

Yeah-- the comment section there is basically a Q&A, so it's helpful.

Wow, this is really cool to see! Dani is right-- aside from the muzzle, this wolf does look a lot like a coyote, but it makes sense that it's a juvenile of a particularly small kind of wolf. In any case, very awesome! Makes me wish we could go fishing for a snack in WolfQuest :P
