Private Messages: Guides, Tips and Tricks

Post by Neamara » Tue Aug 08, 2017 2:59 pm

This topic serves as a guide for making the most out of the private messaging module. Please note that this guide is only intended for the community forums. It does not apply to 2.7 (or above) WolfQuest game accounts.

Maximising Inbox Capacity

Registered users have an inbox capacity of 50 messages. You might fill that up pretty fast if you're a social butterfly or very slowly if you're not sociable or like keeping to yourself. For those of you who find yourselves frequently running low on inbox capacity to the point where you need more space, consider setting up and making full use of folders! Every account can create up to five folders which, when combined with your default inbox folder, grants you a maximum capacity of 250 messages.

Some usergroups bypass this limit, granting all of its members additional inbox space across all folders. This is currently only available for groups that require the extra capacity.

Folder Management

Creating folders
  1. From your private messaging center, select Rules, folders & settings.
  2. Under Folder options, find Add folder. There is a single text field beside this option.
  3. Enter a name for your new folder.
  4. Click the 'Add' button to create the folder.
Renaming folders
  1. From your private messaging center, select Rules, folders & settings.
  2. Under Folder options, find Rename folder. There will be a dropdown menu beside this option.
  3. Select the folder to be renamed then in the text field below it, enter a new name.
  4. Click the 'Rename' button to commit the change.
Deleting folders
  1. From your private messaging center, select Rules, folders & settings.
  2. Under Folder options, find Remove folder. There are two dropdown menus and two radio buttons beside this option.
  3. Select the folder you would like to delete in the top dropdown menu.
    1. If there are any messages you would like to keep, click the radio button for 'Move messages from removed folder to:' and define the target folder in the second dropdown box.
    2. If you would like to delete the folder and its contents, instead select the second radio button for 'Delete all messages within removed folder' and simply ignore the second dropdown box.
  4. Click the 'Remove' button to commit the change.

Rules

You can set rules that will enable the forum to automatically filter or sort incoming messages in almost any way you prefer from the Rules, folders & settings page. Here's a brief overview of each setting and its options:
  • Subject - Filters incoming messages by subject or title.
    • The next stage allows you to set and filter by keywords, which can be used in conjunction with other rules.
      is like
      is not like
      is
      is not
      begins with
      ends with
Sender - Filters incoming messages by sender.

      is friend
      - Filters based on the friends list of your community forum account.
is foe - Filters based on the foes list of your community forum account.
is user - Filters a specific user.
is in usergroup - Filters based on a specific usergroup. This ignores default memberships.
Message - Filters incoming messages based on the message body.
    • is like
      is not like
      is
      is not
Message status - Filters incoming messages based on the status of the message.
    • answered - Defines an action to be performed after you have replied to any message.
forwarded - Defines an action to be performed after you have forwarded any message. (By default, registered users cannot forward PMs.)
Sent To - Filters incoming messages if they were sent to you or your group.
    • to my default usergroup - Sets the defined action to occur if sent to the group that is your current default.
to me - Sets the defined action to occur if the incoming message is sent to your username.
You can remove rules at any time by clicking the 'Delete rule' button sitting on the far right of each entry. To my awareness there are no limitations to how many rules you can have running on your account.

Tips & Tricks

Extras and/or quick guides intended to help people out without all of the details provided in previous sections of this thread.

Blocking

The foes list does not block messages.
Manage foes wrote:Foes are users which will be ignored by default. Posts by these users will not be fully visible. Personal messages from foes are still permitted. Please note that you cannot ignore moderators or administrators.
Fortunately, you can set up a very easy rule to effectively prevent foes from messaging you. To do this:
  1. From your private messaging center, click Rules, folders & settings.
  2. Under Add new rule, use the first dropdown box beside the word If:.
  3. Click the dropdown box and select Sender. Click the 'Next' button.
  4. In the next dropdown box, select is foe. Click the 'Next' button.
  5. In the next dropdown box, select Delete message. This is only a recommendation; what you do here is completely up to you. When you have made your choice, click the 'Add rule' button.
The rule is now active on your account. Anyone in your foes list attempting to send you private messages can no longer do so, as the forum will automatically delete (or whatever you defined) messages they have sent.

Preventing Deleted Messages

Another trick intended to prevent 'deleted messages', an error which occurs when a private message has been deleted from the outbox before it has been read by the recipient. To guarantee delivery to your inbox:
  1. From your private messaging center, click Rules, folders & settings.
  2. Under Add new rule, use the first dropdown box beside the word If:.
  3. Click the dropdown box and select Sent To. Click the 'Next' button.
  4. In the next dropdown box, select to me. Click the 'Next' button.
  5. In the next dropdown box, select Mark as read. Click the 'Add rule' button.
Private messages you receive will now be marked as read by default, preventing the deleted message error. Unfortunately this rule does mean the sender can no longer edit the message or delete it after it has been sent.
Nothing interesting happens.
