It depends.

If it was a wild wolf---it still depends. Wild wolves are naturally scared of all humans so I wouldn't hug a scared one unless if I wish to be injured by those powerful wolf jaws. Wild wolves are scared unless if you stick around and feed them food or you live with the pack just like Shaun Ellis did. Those are the only 2 scenarios in which I would hug a wild wolf.

If it was a captive wolf---yes! Captive wolves at zoos and sanctuaries see humans everyday, so they would probably have no problem in being hugged! However, don't run around waving your arms in the air like you're prey. Then you might become the wolf's tasty breakfest/brunch/lunch/dinner!

If the wolf was captive, habituated around humans, and there was staff around just in case something went awry, then I'd probably pet it and interact with it a bit if it came to me first. However, hugging isn't something most canines like; I've seen far too many whale-eyed dogs with tight faces and concerned "smiles" in pictures of kids hugging them to want to subject them to it. It's just not nice to make an animal uncomfortable if you can prevent it.
Never a wild wolf. The animal would likely avoid me anyway, and I'm not going to approach a wild animal with the intent of having totally friendly, totally chill interaction with it.

Edit: Shaun Ellis was with captive wolves kept in a fenced in enclosure. He is not the "wolfman" everyone thinks he is.
Wolves are super duper average and okay animals.

Ellis was hardly a naturalist to look up to tbh. More on that here.

Hugging any animal, tame or not, isn't wise unless you know the animal very well. Even hugging a strange dog can end well. I recall my grandma's cat scratching me when I was five for hugging it. Hugging a wolf could end in worse, "tame" or not.

It'd be nice but to be honest a wolf would not want to be hugged as in the wild they would never get hugged, so not really as it is against the wolf's wishes. When you go to do something to an animal sometimes I think we should think more about whether the animal would like it.

Well, as long as it didn't bite my face off... Which is a true possibility, people! I don't care how amazing wolves are, they still are very territorial and most likely do hate you! :3

Much as I would love to hug a wolf and as huggable as they look sometimes, I also would prefer to not have my face ripped off. So no, I will keep my face and avoid hugging the wolf.

Not a wild wolf...
It would most likely think I was trying to trap/pin/kill it.
I enjoy having my neck not torn out, thank you very much.

Even a wolf "raised in captivity" could still pose quite a risk. I'd certainly hesitate, and decline.

I don't think I would hug it... I guess I would maybe let it sniff my hand and if it didn't act 'snappy' maybe pet its head? But that's probably it.

If it was a wolf pup however, yeah, guess I would hug it then Because those little creatures are often biting or nibbling out of playfulness... ness.

Depends on wether the captive wolf was well socialized. Even though wolves will be more skittish around people than dogs due to genetics, I'm sure some captive wolves wouldn't mind you touching them. I guess it'd also depend on how you hugged it.

The overall chance would be interesting enough, but I think the end result would be the same. I would not attempt to hug one, especially if I knew nothing about its behavioral patterns or background. The idea is still neat to think about though! XD

I think that if I was up at my cabin alone in the woods, and I saw a wolf, I would try to earn it's trust. Maybe by sinking low to the ground and not making eye contact. I wouldn't run, because that might motivate the wolf to chase me. If it comes closer, I would put out my hand. And then... I don't know, pray it wouldnt bite my hand off :P
