Favorite Wolf Exhibit

Post by ZooGuy » Fri Aug 03, 2007 12:47 pm

Since we are working on the WolfQuest partners (zoos, wild animal parks, etc.), I thought I would ask what people think is the coolest wolf exhibit they have ever seen.

Here at the Minnesota Zoo we have two wolf exhibits - one for endangered Mexican wolves and a new one for gray wolves on our Minnesota Trail. My favortie feature of the new exhibit is a sound panel where you can listen to different wolf calls, whimpers, etc.

The Brookfield Zoo in Chicago has a model "kill site" outside of their wolf exhibit where you can examine the bones of the deer to see if you can determine why the wolf selected this deer out of the herd.

Any other favorites?

Interesting - my list of good wolf exhibits would include:

* The International Wolf Centre in Ely, Minnesota. Socialised wolves that seemed perfectly content, the first time I'd seen a wolf "up close". The surrounding countryside is beautiful as well.

* The Skansen, Djurgården in Stockholm, Sweden. The first time I'd seen unsocialised wolves looking content in a zoo - chasing each other around their enclosure and generally having a fun time.

* Wildwood in Kent, England. My local wolf pack and thanks to glass viewing windows you can get nose-to-nose with the wolves if you're patient (once their curiosity overcomes their distrust of people). They also have two socialised wolves who'll rush over to say "hello" if you're one of the first visitors of the day, tails wagging like mad.

* Wolf Park in Indiana, USA. More socialised wolves than you can shake a stick at, again well looked after and with an excellent international reputation.

And last, but not least, a nod to the place I'm involved with - the UK Wolf Conservation Trust in Berkshire, England. There's nothing like spending a Sunday morning with wolves howling in the background!

I know this thread is like, super old but I though the coolest wolf exhibit I saw was at the Lakota Wolf Preserve.

Unfortunately, the only wolf exhibit I've seen is the small two-wolf pack at the Calgary zoo. They are pretty interesting though, they're two sisters and they're quite up on their years (11 if I recall correctly). I'm lucky enough to go to the zoo pretty often so I get to see them a lot. They spend a lot of time patrolling and marking the enclosure and finding scents and small treats and stimuli objects that the zookeepers leave in their enclosure and they will sometimes swim in the pond when it's hot. The keepers also do a public feeding once a week where they get a small animal carcass or parts of a larger carcass. Last time I went they got raw turkeys, it was pretty cool to see their behaviour when they're eating (and how they interact with the crows and magpies that try to steal pieces  )

Roguemoon, you probably won't see this since your last login was in 2020 but oh well . Others can enjoy the content.

I got to attend the Calgary Zoo last week. The wolf exhibit has three wolves now; I wonder if any are the same as you saw five years ago. It was my first time, so not sure who was there before.

There was ongoing construction to the immediate right of their enclosure when I was there. I think that's why the one wolf is pacing and panting at the opposite side of the enclosure in these videos I took. Disregard my audio comment about feeding time, I hadn't connected the dots yet! The other wolf was having a nap in the corner and didn't seem as bothered, at least at the moment. A third wolf is offscreen at the rear of the enclosure, walking around less quickly and more casually than the wolf featured here. You can actually hear some of the construction in these recordings.

While it was distressing to me to see the one wolf visibly upset by the construction (or maybe the shrieking children?!), I did appreciate how close I got to see the wolf and its movements :wolf:. The only other wolf enclosure I have seen to date was at the Toronto Zoo a few years ago. They had Artic wolves. That was a good encounter too; a staff quad went by and the wolves got up and followed it along the fence line, giving me a chance to watch them trot effortlessly like the Calgary wolves did here.
