I'd only had purebreds dogs my whole life and finally wanted to adopt my first mutt from a rescue. It was like getting interrogated and was a terrible experience for a first time adopter. I understand that the rescues want good homes for their dogs but some screen way too harshly. I ended up getting a puppy off of craigslist that needed a home just as much. <3 I don't think I'd try and adopt from a shelter again but I love volunteering at shelters. I have however, taken in stray cats and I've adopted mustangs from the BLM so I'm pretty sure they count as rescues/ taking in the unwanted.
