The Giant Underwater Garbage Patch

Post by Edme1 » Mon Jul 23, 2012 9:51 pm

I learned at a zoo-coordinated program that around the Pacific Ocean there is a gigantic underwater 'garbage patch'. Currents funnel stray litter down towards one spot, where it accumulates. Plastic bags, water bottles, food scraps, and packaging materials are all under there, trapped by the ocean. The garbage patch endangers animals and plants of the ocean, as pieces often float away. Turtles mistake plastic bags for jellyfish and attempt to eat them, choking themselves, and underwater animals can get cut and caught in old nets or clothing. The more we litter, the more we could eventually add to the Pacific's garbage patch.

Awesome! c: The garbage patch is over 1 mile long, I think. It's sad that so much trash can get into the ocean and make such a huge patch of garbage.

That's no good! I hope they clean it up... and the animals avoid it. It's quite pitiful how people just nonchalantly litter.

I think I've heard about this before. It's so sad how people take their only planet for granted like if it gets too dirty we can just move to another one. Earth is the only planet so far that can sustain life, and people are fast making it none.

Well-said, everyone! Just a reminder, let's not turn this into a 'humans are bad' thread, that being against the rules. ;) But I agree with you all. We should all take measures to avoid adding more litter to the pacific garbage patch.

Yep. Before we know it we will have to figure out how to live on Mars. People don't realize that litter will eventually destroy the earth before the sun explodes.

Obviously, one of the major issues with the Great Pacific Garbage Patch is the effect it has on wildlife and mammals – on the stomachs of the birds who eat it, on the sea life that is polluted by the toxins from it, and even on humans when toxins from the rubbish are absorbed by small fish, which are eaten by larger fish and then consumed by humans.

Wow, this very sad, :( just think of all the wildlife, and even the people who are or have been affected by it?
