What have you done to help your environment?

Post by Sintact » Mon Mar 30, 2009 8:53 pm

Okay, I don't know if this is off topic but any way I would like to express my opinion about saving the world and wildlife.

As I have seen a lot of topics and news talking about saving the world and saving the animals, with this, I have my own question that I make to all the people that talk about this specific topic.

Are you listening to your own words, or are you just talking because saving the world is the nowadays 'fashion' topic?
Not less important to ask.
What are you doing for saving our precious world, our animals?

Well, I want to tell my own personal experience, but I warn you, I have lots to talk about. Okay, I will start then.

Every summer, my family and me go to Pucón, south of Chile. In Pucón, there's a lake called, Villarica Lake. (http://www.andes.org.uk/expeditions-and ... d-lago.jpg). There are a lot of rivers, wildlife and people... people that daily throw more than one ton of garbage to those rivers that lead to the lake.

When I was little, I was walking alone in the beach, exploring the center of it, there were a lot of trees and willows. Suddently, I heard a sharp cry, I ran to it, and I saw a kind of eagle (Tiuque) suffocating with a large piece of plastic bag. I couldn't help it, I was alone there and didn't know what to do. So I left it there.

The next day I returned to the same beach to see if the eagle was still there, and well, actually it was there, laying dead with the plastic bag coming out from it's pick. The same day, I was walking on the same beach and at the shore there were dead fishes entangled in a plastic net.

Well, the thing is that from that day on, I went every day of the summer to the same beach, this time, with tons of plastic bags. I started to clean this long beach, to help those animals that were dead that day, and for future generations. I took one week in cleaning all the beach by my own also separating each material for then recicle it, and let me say, it really worth it when you see all the beach clean, and the eagles flying up at the sky alive.

Nowadays I continue cleaning the same beach, this time, with a group of friends and my sister that help me once a week. I hope that in some years, more people will join me, and that way we can save the animals and the environment.

That's my story, I have a more like those, but well. I want to read yours.

My family recycles, and I try to save as much electricity as possible. And we walk to the bus stop instead of drive. And we take the bus instead of drive which saves more gas. I don't litter and my family is very keen on not wasting.

That's awesome for both of you. Very well done ^ _^.
Here at my house we don't drop garbage, instead, we separate the food, plastics, paper and others and each of them, we recycle.

The food we deposite it at the garden in a corner of it, in 200 days the food degrades and it's soil by then and an excelent fertilizer for plants.

Well, the others we recycle them at the supermarket were they accept this kind of objects.

Guys, if you want. I can take some pictures about my way of recycling and post it here. Of course I won't post pictures of myself because in that case it would be breaking WQ rules. What do you think?

Well, to help my environment I use little light. When I go on the computer the room in usually
all dark or lit by sunlight.

At school, when my friends are careless and drop trash, I pick it up and throw it away or recycle it.

Oh yes, and I recycle.

Well, that's kind of obious. If you throw it on your room, someone else will pick it up and put it into the trush bag. Maybe you could separate the objects and clasify them for then recycling them.

Also a good way for saving water that I do. I use my clock when using the shower. I set up a max of 5 minutes a shower. That way we are not like spending ineccesary galons of water.

I think that in Australia you can't use the shower for more than 5 minutes. There, when you use the shower it gives you just 5 minutes for using it, then, when the time is finished, the water stops, if you want to continue washing yourself you have to press a botton again.

This is the best wait for being concious about how many minutes you spent in every shower, and then you can calculate how many water you use.
