New things found in AE's files (Spoilers)

Post by TheCatInGrey » Tue Oct 27, 2020 6:18 pm

Findings from within the game's core files found by browsing through its assets with a third-party tool.

I've got good news for all the XBOX 360 owners out there! https://imgur.com/a/GDkPgL9
Also, any ideas what these things are? There's a lot of them. https://imgur.com/a/jXEAtp4
Habitats for all the animals (anyone remember this video?) https://imgur.com/a/V4g15oe

I think the Elk's Club sign uses the old model. Look at how blocky it is, and the blurry textures. Also that eagle is terrifying. https://imgur.com/a/8Fmdlp3

This clearer version of the Welcome to Lost River sign reveals that it is the same image from 2.7- note the trees and rocks. Not a big surprise, but cool nonetheless. https://imgur.com/a/m0mYwVU

This image is just titled "Calf_Fur.png". I assume it's a bison calf? I haven't found a model to go along with it. https://imgur.com/a/roUcLgL

Default control layout for XBOX 360. https://imgur.com/a/aj1E7ME

The house near the trailer by the Back Forty is referred to in the files as "Cottage_V". sounds a lot friendlier than it looks.

Kitties! https://imgur.com/a/MlpmPlV

There are no models (that I can find) but there are a few textures for the bighorn sheep. https://imgur.com/a/Bi3anu2 Note that the texture is a baby- babies are named (adult name)_Y. for example, the wolf pups are GrayWolf_Y. There is also audio of adults ramming:

Also, beavers! No textures that I can find, but we have the model. https://imgur.com/a/qQPML5U

Potential compass icons? Maybe map icons? https://imgur.com/a/xYyDFK3

It's hard to tell, but I believe this image (from the hunting tutorial) was taken fairly early in development. Note the trees in the background. https://imgur.com/a/ZrsmRI5

This is the entry of the diary in the watch tower in Lost River, added for Howloween. https://imgur.com/a/g2Bb1q9

This image is called Notebook in the game's files. Couldn't find a model to go with it, any ideas? https://imgur.com/a/ducFciR

PS4 owners are in luck as well! No word on PS5. https://imgur.com/a/I85nItq

Santa?? https://imgur.com/a/nB2cehd

All files relating to lightning and thunder are prefixed with THOR. https://imgur.com/a/v2oGgK6

Some sprites which I believe are the platforms the game is planned to release on. This includes platforms that did not receive 2.7, such as 3DS and various consoles. 2.7 only ran on Windows, Mac, IOS, Android, and Kindle. https://imgur.com/a/uta7YKI

Black bears are coming to wolfquest, if these tracks are anything to go by. https://imgur.com/a/npYh5W3
Black bears are also mentioned under "predators" on the official wolfopedia.

I know that there was a glitch where eagles would drop their fish, and the devs decided to make it a feature, and make dropped fish edible, but I have yet to see anyone actually document this online, nor have I seen it myself. I have found proof that trout exist within the game, however. https://imgur.com/a/kyo1B1E If you've seen a dropped fish in the game, or if you have a screencap (!!!) please let me know!

For whatever reason, the game has whip sound effects. https://imgur.com/a/BlnzPVN

Windows icons. https://imgur.com/a/CDGwM6h

A newborn wolf. Note the ears, as wolves (and other canines) are born with eyes and ears stuck shut. https://imgur.com/a/e2OhthP

Here's the pups we're used to for comparison. https://imgur.com/a/Cj0q0Je

Adolescent pup for Tower Fall. https://imgur.com/a/tk6lMwn

I cant read the script files, but newborn pups do have scripts. Not sure what these do. https://imgur.com/a/3WqDbsg

Interesting stuff as always.

Performed some maintenance on this thread as it did not comply with the forum guidelines. The author's reply posts have now been deleted and their contents have now been merged into the first post. I've also added (spoilers) to the title due to the inclusion of some as-of-yet unreleased content that exists in the game files. (Fun fact: adult bison were in the game files long before their release.)

I found and screenshotted this fish carcass near the Lamar River in Amethyst Mountain.

This is a very neat find! That calf texture set definitely appears to be a Bison calf, which implies to me that, at some point anyway, there were/are plans to include bison calves in the game. I imagine that the footprint for what appears to a Black Bear would be of similar purpose. I wonder if there are any texture, sound, or model files for a Black Bear in the game files, because that would definitely confirm that they are coming to the game at some point (the Wolfopedia definitely hints at that).

The Bighorn Sheep texture and sound files imply that Bighorn Sheep are definitely going to be added sometime soon, though I think I remember seeing the Bighorn Sheep sound files shown in a devblog video about a year ago. I wonder if the Bighorn Sheep ramming sounds will be the only actual sound that they make in the game. The Bighorn Sheep in theHunter Classic, a hunting game that I play often, only make audible sounds when the rams fight and when the sheep are climbing up cliffsides, so I wonder if it will be similar with the Bighorn Sheep in WolfQuest AE. The Bighorn Sheep textures you found appear to be from an adult female sheep or an older lamb, which we know will be in the game because of the sneak peek that we got of them in the "Meet the Prey" trailer from 2019. I also find it ironic that the Beavers and Bighorns that were both shown in that trailer still have yet to be added, even though bull Bison have already been in the game for a while and they weren't shown in the Meet the Prey trailer. Perhaps the Bison were something that the team started working on later, or perhaps they were just nowhere near being ready to show off yet at the time when that trailer was released. Or maybe, and this is the most likely possibility IMHO, the developers just wanted to keep them a secret.

That beaver model, even without textures, looks very detailed, and I can't wait to see what they're like in the live game. The kitties make sense to be in the files because the black variant was visible in Lost River during the Halloween event. I wonder what the other cat skin is in the files for, perhaps that one was scrapped at some point in favor of the black one for the Halloween event. They both look very well-made, so I'd like to see if both of those cat variants are permanently included in the Lost River map at some point.

All in all, these findings in the game files are all very interesting, and some developer feedback or comments on the purpose of some of these files would definitely be interesting to see.

(That last part probably won't happen, because I don't think that anyone on the WolfQuest team actually checks out any of these discussion threads, but it could be interesting if it does happen.)

Bison calves are a nice golden brown but I do not think this texture specifically belongs to them. It looks a lot more like the moose calf that you can find in Slough Creek later in the summer. They are very bright, chicken nugget looking babies, just like that texture.

Considering the team has a partnership with gim studio for 3D models, I'm willing to bet the black texture for Halloween is one the team made, and the other is what the cat originally came with.

PS4 and Xbox controllers can be used through Steam/On PCs, and that the Unity engine likely has controller glyphs on hand for developers to use in their base assets for anyone that wants to implement controller input for their games. It does not necessarily mean that WQ will go to consoles to have those assets in the files.

The black and red dots are likely splat maps for placements of trees, rocks, and textures onto the terrain.

The santa texture is for the inflatable santa clause that gets put up next to the Eduweb tent in Amethyst around the holidays.

Confirming Loach's information: the texture marked as "calf_fur.png" is indeed the texture associated with the moose calf model. Screenshot for reference-

The whip crack is kind of neat. I don't recall 2.5's cattle ranch having that sound effect--just panicked moos, dog barks, and then a gunshot if you didn't exit the pasture in time.

Jumping back into the asset-sifting... while I'm extracting, here are some of my findings while browsing assets for Wiki research:
Hidden Content
This board requires you to be registered and logged-in to view hidden content.
Next up: the coats currently suspected to be possible future DLC? We've seen some of these already on rival wolves, so they're definitely in-game now... only they aren't available for players. These in-game screenshots were posted while I was compiling these, so what I've got isn't complete because I gave up midway through compiling shortly after the FB group post. In any case, they look way better in-game.

Other filenames: "Small spot" (all-black with a small white spot on throat/chest), "831F" (black with whitening muzzle), "838Mb" or "838 Big blaze" (black-over-white mixed with earthy undertones, dark mask, light muzzle/lower ruff), "Half black" (dark gray back, silver body, light legs, chest, and muzzle), 192M (all-white coat), and 21Mb (summarised as a gray-on-white variation of 7Fg's face/mask; dark gray back, light underside and legs.) There may be more. I haven't dug too deep yet.

Note: These aren't the full filenames, just the part that seems like it either is or might be a designation or identifier.

My new personal favourite is "42fb". Finally, a more Blanca-y coat. xD 21Mb looks like it'd be a suitable replacement coat for my secondary girl. 🤔 We really are spoiled for choice when it comes to coats... if these truly are future DLC coats, Dave no, you're spoiling us too much.

On another note which has already been mentioned, there really are quite a few leftover assets from 2.7. Compass rose, mate heart, mobile controls and an old Xbox 360 controller from 2.7's interface are still in the game files. Another leftover, though one I've already touched on over on the Wiki, is the old den icon from 2.5/2.7. I'd guess this was used during development, testing early on in Slough Creek development, or perhaps just a placeholder while an icon was in the works? I have no idea if it still being used in-game as of 1.0.6e is intentional as a nice throwback, or purely accidental/unintentional on the devs' part. Specifically, cave #1 (as it was designated on the Wiki's table) reuses said asset.

Potential compass icons? Maybe map icons?

Looking through the files, I managed to find this one. It seems to share the same style as others, so probably just a preset/stock icon imported and leftover from something else.(Whatever this is, it belonged to a set: matching icons include a lighthouse, dock, and a town among others. Their styles differ from WQ's.)

There are also various "TPS" icons present for social media and other games consoles: Xbox, Wii U, 3DS, PS3, Windows, Mac, Android, IOS, among others... Windows Store, webplayer... etc. Not quite sure what or where they originate from or whether they're used in-game (probably not) but it seems they're yet another asset carried over from 2.7.

For anyone curious: without tinting/brightness, there are sixteen puppy coat variations according to the textures present in the game files! :)
🤔

That's strange, I thought we already had a spitfire coat (926F)? I'm very excited about White Lady though, she was one of my favorites.

These are some very interesting finds! It's surprising to me that the new DLC wolf coats are, in some cases, already in the game files and can already be found on in-game stranger wolves! I can't wait for those DLC coats to be released, whenever they are I will definitely be downloading them! The sheer amount of variety in wolf coats that we will now have access to is going to be amazing, we're definitely going to be spoiled for choice.

I like 42Fb a lot because it is a nice, pure white coat and we need more of those in my opinion. It looks like a nice, natural adult version of the old 2.7 pure white wolf pup haha. Even if it's based on a real wolf.

Definitely looking forward to the new white coats. So nice to finally see more options. ^^

--
Couple more discoveries since I last sifted through the game files- found in public beta 1.0.6m:

The new DLC coats look to be coming along nicely in terms of progress -- they now have associated back textures (used for the courtship wolf info panel) and selector buttons (used in the coats section of the wolf customizer). No idea when to expect them, but it's looking like a good sign!

Another new discovery... Bighorn ewes' scent data. Tracks have been in the game files for a long time now, but no associated scent. Looks like this species may fall under the
orange spectrum. As always, don't take this as 100% confirmation; it's still in-dev, so that does have the potential to change before they release in-game. The next stage is looking into models. (Last I checked, bighorn ewes already had a model and textures.) Update: Scent data removed. Seems to have been included accidentally in the build it was discovered in. Guess we'll have to wait and see if this changes!

Wolf pups have received three new textures: GrayBrown, GrayStripe, and BrownStripe. Samples were added to the Wiki's "Wolf pup" article under the Pelage sections last night. They're up from sixteen textures to nineteen.

These have been on the Wiki for some time so not exactly a new discovery, but every time I pass by the article they're used on, I wonder why they go unused... or how long they'll stay unused, and how long they've been there. (Something about that nose looks off to me... maybe I'm overthinking things.)
What's more, these are the only Life is Rough swatches that have been updated to use the new wolf model; the others don't appear to have any new icons in the game files.

  • ORIGINAL POST 3-JUN-2021
Been a while... haven't sifted too thoroughly lately. Found an eye matching the style of age perk icons. Not sure what this is yet -- my oldest wolf is 5. Anyone know if this is used by anything, or does it go unused?
https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/wolfq ... 0622232638

Found on June 6th while checking game files to confirm the Slough Creek bottle does not exist: this custom-looking boundary mesh in the game files. Based on the filename, it is the boundary north of the Lamar River in Amethyst Mountain.
Spoiler
Show
Image
What makes it interesting imo is that it's the only custom boundary, and the only boundary mesh in the game files. The design of this looks like it is supposed to go along with the river, or perhaps it is trying to stay at a consistent height with the terrain, but I would guess those rough curves may be its weakness...? So now we have a good idea of why the non-custom, meshless boundaries are most resilient against players' attempts to bypass them.
  • UPDATE 5-MAY-2022
Public Beta 1.0.8L data dig:
  • two new pup coats
  • ten new adult coats - container name suggests these are the upcoming DLC coats
  • four additional new adult coats - container name suggests they may be new variation coats
Now, because this is a public beta, I'm not inclined to upload any samples of them to the Wiki just yet since we don't know if there are any more inbound, so we'll be leaving articles and uploads until it is released into the live Early Access depot. ;) From what I've seen so far of the textures, they all look pretty spiffy on and off of the adult wolf model.

And before I forget: hi dave
