Overwatch

Post by Kereudio » Sat Nov 18, 2017 10:21 am

I believe it is a crime to not have a thread for this game :V
Overwatch is a MOBA (mutliplayer online battle arena) by Blizzard in the style of a first person shooter. You select one of 26 heroes, spread across four groups (offense, defense, tank, and support) to play in a game and achieve victory, each having a different role and set of abilities to adapt to most players play styles.
Overview
In Overwatch, heroes do battle in diverse locations around the world. From the technological marvel of Numbani to the manufacturing powerhouse of Volskaya, each map has a unique layout and specific win conditions that your team must meet in order to secure victory.
Maps
ARENA
Each team strives to eliminate all opponents in 1v1 or 3v3 scenarios.

ASSAULT
Attackers fight to capture a series of objectives; defenders hold them off until time runs out.

ASSAULT/ESCORT
Attackers first capture a payload, then escort it to its destination; defenders attempt to hold them back.

CAPTURE THE FLAG
Two teams of six players compete to capture the enemy team’s flag while defending their own.

CONTROL
Two teams fight to hold a single objective at a time; the first team to win two rounds wins the match.

DEATHMATCH
Players race to score more kills than their opponents in an 8-player free-for-all match.

ESCORT
Attackers escort a payload to a delivery point, while defenders strive to keep the payload from reaching its destination before time elapses.

TEAM DEATHMATCH
Two teams race to score more kills than their opponents in a 4v4 match.
You can find out more at the link above! Overall, the goal when playing is to have fun and work as a team to lead on to victory! You level up and gain loot boxes, which unlock cosmetic perks for the heroes as you advance. You can play in competitive seasons once you reach level 25, and you can hop into a 6v6 match in quick play, or hop into a deathmatch, capture the flag, or many other fun game modes in the Arcade. You can also join other players and fight a team of AI controlled heroes if that suits your fancy more.

---

But, man, I really love Overwatch. It quickly became one of my favorite games when I bought it, and they are constantly adding new heroes and improving upon current ones. In fact, a new support hero, Moira, was just released recently after being announced at Blizzcon. She is a healer... kind of, but she also dishes out damage. As well, this game as a huge load of story and lore that I believe everyone can appreciate even if the game itself is not for them. From the heroes profiles, to comics and cinematic shorts, there is just a lot to unpack here! This post, posted shortly after the game's open beta ended, will give you a good starting point on the lore if that is what you're really here for! I seriously recommend everyone try this game or jump into the lore.

oh, there wasn't an overwatch thread already? that's surprising. anyway overwatch is easily one of my top favourite games, been playing it since early january this year. i've almost got a silver border on my profile, i'm sooo close. i used to be a hardcore pharah main (i think i've got at least 80 hours of her on quickplay, can't remember), with mercy as my second most played. however, orisa, oh man, once she was released she became my new main and has already overtaken mercy as my second most played. i love playing orisa in competitive the most, i feel like i can get so much done as her. i didn't put a lot of effort into competitive in the previous seasons, but since this season one of my friends decided he would run off and climb to masters i have some catching up to do haha. i got placed in gold for whatever reason and thankfully climbed into plat quicker than last time (gold can be like a black hole sometimes i swear), and now i'm on my way to diamond hopefully. also i've really gotten into reaper lately, didn't realise i was good at him until i just randomly decided to start playing him for the first time in quickplay the other day and found i was consistently able to get 4 gold medals as him like when i play pharah. so yay!

edit: just realised you said "improving upon" current heroes as a mercy main. :'( ....are you sure about that statement? lol. poor nerfy

I'm trying to convince myself that they're for the good of the game and the character! ....
.....im so not sure i was okay with the changes before this new wind up animation, I seriously do love her new ult, but :V i dont do competitive because my game has a problem with crashing in the graphics driver (an issue that's been around since beta that no one has yet to figure out for sure...) so I'm stuck with teams that refuse to protect me or group together or really do anything that would make me not useless :'(

but yessss man I love Orisa too. I never considered myself a tank-y type person, I've always been DPS in everything else, but Orisa is my favorite anchor tank. I think she's right behind Mercy in play time, with Mercy being like, a minute or two behind D.va currently. I once was playing and some random dude from the enemy team was like "dang, Orisa, you're great, no seriously you're the hardest to kill Orisa I've ever seen" and it made my day. Bless that random dude, gave me confidence.

yeah i love her new ult too but man this new quicksand mercy just doesn't feel like the right move. i wish people would just learn to work better as a team and actually focus the healers instead of complaining that mercy is overpowered or whatever. anyone can feel overpowered if you leave them alive the whole time lol. weird that you have a crashing issue, that's the first time i've ever heard of someone having any sort of issue like that with overwatch. yeah i get complimented on my orisa playing too! people always just assume that she's bad so once they see someone who actually knows how to use her they get impressed lol. i always get told to switch off orisa in comp even when i've got like 3 golds or something and the dps don't. :/

yeah... like. hmm. i get their logic behind changing her, i really do, and i am biased in liking the changes to her ult because i was so bad at the 5-man rez. a friend of mine pointed out that the rez mechanic in general, compared to similar games, is broken in that it allows you to negate kills every 31.5 seconds (gotta be specific now :V) because, as they put it, it makes her a must pic in the regards that it takes longer than 30 seconds to pick off most tanks, and it doesn't matter how good of a healer you are as other healers besides mercy, a 5v6 without a tank is just that, tankless. i do wish that, instead of putting mercy through the ringer more than any other hero to date (how many times has a change of hers come to PTR now since the ult change??) they would just make their other healers more viable, such as Moira's ability to negate a lot of damage if she has her healing spray on you. the lucio changes were just completely unnecessary for one, and it'd be nice if zen could himself get a bonus depending on which of his orbs are active, if either.

i also think that, for mercy especially, they are not giving enough time in between changes to really see how they affect gameplay as a whole. i mean sure, hundreds of thousands of matches can happen in 2 weeks, but i dont think a 2 week trend is indicative of overall changes to the gameplay at all. they should just leave her be for a while and see if a change really does break her in some way rather than just "oh we got a week of mercy being a must pick and people complaining, better nerf her!"

...that ended up being a two paragraph rant wow. tl;dr: LEAVE. MERCY. ALONE. JEFF!
that's the first time i've ever heard of someone having any sort of issue like that with overwatch.
it is so weird, dude! and it's only with overwatch, i havent had even remotely a similar issue to other games! sometimes the map (mostly king's row and watchpoint) will go black with only my HUD and the map markers visible, which is super weird and not something i've ever seen, but i believe that may be a glitch in shaders perhaps? and sometimes it'll just straight up crash, and sometimes it'll "crash" (read: give me a system error) as I'm exiting, which says it crashed in the graphics driver, and it'll like, crash my entire driver until I restart it, so my resolution goes all wonky and my brightness turns up... anyway, it's super weird, and i've been following a thread on it that was started during beta, and the best anyone's come up with is "idk reinstall your drivers maybe"
i always get told to switch off orisa in comp even when i've got like 3 golds or something and the dps don't. :/
like, on one hand, i can lowkey understand asking someone to switch in comp (and if they dont they dont im sure the 'bad players' understand the consequences of doing that), because of the nature of comp, but i get this flak in qp too, and it's like. bro i'm just here to have fun, provide shields or heals, and not babysit you. protect your tanks from flankers and protect your healers every once in a while, PLEASE

Does anyone else on WQ watch Overwatch League (OWL?). I used to watch almost every game I could back in the beginning, but then I stopped watching it completely until today because I got a notification that the first semifinal match was starting (between NYXL and Fusion, how could I resist?). I noticed that this pause also mostly coincided with me taking a break from playing Overwatch for months. I guess I have to be playing it to be interested in watching it hah.

Also... I LOVE playing as Brigitte (only 400 points away from giving her my 3rd gold weapon. She deserves it) and can't wait for Hammond. The new endorsement system also makes me so happy.

Only recently got into Overwatch as I missed out on the initial hype and got it for free from my friend 3 years after it'd been released. My main characters are Lucio, Wrecking Ball and Symmetra (an odd bunch, I know). It's my first FPS and i've gotta say I really like it, except sometimes the people you play with can be a bit toxic.

Overwatch has been one of my most favorite games ever since I got it! I'm a Mercy main with my highest SR being in diamond around 3100s I believe. I'm trying to learn Ana in the process, but when it comes to competitive play, I usually pick Mercy since I usually have a high win-rate with her. I'm pretty excited with Overwatch 2 coming out, I just hope that it doesn't disappoint after what happened with Jeff Kaplan leaving Blizzard Entertainment. Still, I'm hyped. I'm a console player so if anyone would be interested in playing with me (especially now that OW is officially cross-play!), feel free to add me!
