My all time favorite video game must be The Last Of Us. I just love it--it has such a smooth plot and it doesn't get boring nor annoying. Several video games have sidekicks who accompany you and so forth. This game managed to make the secondary character (Ellie) actually really interesting and 'strong' in many ways. I just love the creativity the developers put into it.

I'd have to say it's a perfect tie between Undertale and Final Fantasy XII

I like Undertale because the characters are all funny and charming and fun to watch. Even the jerks. The story hits the particular balance of funny, weird, dark, and emotional that really makes a work stick with me, and nothing feels too heavily done. You can really tell that Earthbound was a big influence. I also think it did a good job making its points about video game conventions and How People Are.

Also, Toby Fox's soundtrack is gorgeous. I'd marry that man's music if I could.

A lot of what I like about FFXII has to do with how big it feels. The locations are huge and full of detail, and each of the populated areas really feels like it has its own culture. Even the crusty old videogame trope of 'the endgame monsters are just fancy recolored versions of the early game monsters" look good. The game's bestiary feels like something a real ancient naturalist would write, and it goes into detail about how every monster is particularly adapted to the area you encounter it in (The desert-dwelling version of a particular monster would have claws and rough skin while the sewer-dwelling one would be more amphibious.) It also provides information about each monster's rare drops as well as a lot of the game world's lore, history, and geography if you fight enough monsters. I also appreciate the way they handled the real-time battle system, so you can basically automate the encounters when you're passing through some low-level areas, but you're not forced to either sit back and watch or just solo everything when your party's A.I. starts acting fatally dumb, because you can program their automatic actions yourself and manually take control of them whenever. I liked the political main plot more than a lot of people seemed too, it's basically like Star Wars in a fantasy setting.

It also gets points in my book for making the moogles look like real creatures that could plausibly exist, and for not ending up neck-deep in the Uncanny Valley in the attempt

The Halo series holds a special place in my heart. I especially liked Halo 2 and Reach.

I've always loved Oblivion. It looks so pretty even though all the characters have baby faces (The creators, Bethesda, were still trying to make faces. lol.).

Okami all the way! ♥ Played through it multiple times and it never gets old. I'm pretty certain it will always be my favorite; it'll be hard for another game to top it.
