Keeping Up With The Winter Storm

Post by psy » Sat Apr 22, 2023 6:04 pm

This is a shot at making a pack journal of sorts for a legacy pack playthrough, kicking things off with a Norse-themed pack. Shoutout to IceaPlayzPC and other members for the inspiration for this thread!

The Winter Storm Pack
Current Roster: 1
Generation: 1

To study the ins-and-outs of the typical gray wolf pack, researchers have decided to track the lifespan of a newer wolf pack in Yellowstone National Park. These logs detail the season-by-season developments of this pack, nicknamed the Winter Storm Pack. The members of this pack will be assigned identification numbers as well as themed nicknames as more are discovered.

This post will detail the current roster of the pack as well as any deceased or missing members. Posts beyond this will act as seasonal log entries. The year and generation of the log will also be posted.

32M — ODINCURRENT DOMINANT MALE
Odin's origins cannot be directly traced as he began being tracked when he was already dispersed from his birth pack. He is the founder of the Winter Storm Pack and the current dominant male. Strong and confident (to a fault), Odin got into quite a bit of trouble in his youthful dispersal days and still has a tendency to make risky decisions.

53F — FREYJACURRENT DOMINANT FEMALE
Freyja was a dispersal female coming from the Hayden Pack. Her and her older sister 52F roamed the hills of Amethyst Mountain together, both searching for potential partners. They met Odin on the outskirts of the Wapiti Pack's territory and were enamored by the male; ultimately, Freyja caught his eye the most and became the recipient of his courting efforts. She is the founding mother of the Winter Storm Pack and the current dominant female. Freyja is considerably more skittish around other wolves than Odin and not terribly social, but she is a very confident hunter and ferocious protector of her pack.

Fall, Year 1.
This fall, two-year-old dispersal male 32M, nicknamed Odin, was officially tracked for observation. Odin was found roaming the fields of the Burn in the Amethyst Mountain region of Yellowstone. Soon after his observation period began, he proved himself to be quite a risk-taking wolf. He spent much of his time tracking an elk herd through the trees of Fossil Forest. Odin preyed on a lithe, weaker-looking cow elk within the herd, and one day, he took on the challenge of hunting the elk down alone. After much struggling, he was successful, though not without the elk crushing his paw, injuring it for a few days. Odin staked out the carcass of his kill for a while after, fending off a slew of scavenging beasts, from foxes to coyotes to even a cougar, who he ferociously fought until he could no longer handle the heat.

Abandoning his prize, Odin ventured northwest towards Specimen Creek to explore, finding himself in the depths of the Wapiti Pack's territory. He was confronted by Wapiti 3F, who did not shy away from defending her pack's land from a loner. Odin, willing to take on the challenge, engaged in combat with 3F, tiring both wolves out until 3F retreated deeper into her pack's territory. He staked out this small piece of Wapiti land for some time longer until a patrol of three Wapiti wolves approached him in his sleep, finally chasing him out into the unclaimed lands of Amethyst Mountain.

Lesson learned: don't try to take on a wolf pack as a loner. Odin has returned to traveling this region alone, staking out new herds of prey to feast on and searching for other dispersal wolves that share his plight. He eventually took to hunting in the southern portion of the Wapiti Pack's territory, this time careful not to linger too close to any Wapiti wolves.

Odin was later found courting not one but two dispersal females from the Hayden Pack, three-year-old 53F and four-year-old 52F, outside of the Wapiti territory. After some deliberation, Odin chose to pursue the younger 53F, who we nickname Freyja.

Freyja and Odin's courtship had a slow start, as Freyja was considerably less social than Odin and skittish around other wolves. Over time, the two became more comfortable with each other and became loyal hunting and exploration companions. The pair were spotted taking down a mule deer by the Burn as snow began to fall. They were successful in claiming their kill, but it wouldn't last for long.
