Troublemakers Pack Legacy

Post by Runic_Raptor » Fri Apr 01, 2022 1:43 am

Since I'm nearing completion of my founder's life, I figured it might be time to post about his litters thus far. Earlier years I logged afterwards, so they have fewer details than later years which I documented as I went.

Each post will be a different year. I play on accurate, but NOT Ironwolf for the founder. All of his descendants will play on Ironwolf.

-- :wolf: :wolf: --

Introducing our founding wolves, Trouble and Mischief:

Trouble is a 2-year old brown dispersal male. In his youth, he gained a reputation for being undaunted, tormenting other packs seemingly just for the heck of it. He's incredibly fast and can run for miles, but he's not terribly strong and has had frequent problems with his health.

Trouble's mate, Mischief, is a 3-year old grey dispersal female. Like Trouble, she's also a cheeky young wolf, and is not afraid of jumping into a hunt. She's fairly fast and strong, but lacks the incredible endurance of Trouble.

As expected, the two of them together cause mayhem in Yellowstone...

Year 1

Trouble paired himself with another well-known wolf, a 3-year old female aptly named "Mischief". The two of them produced a litter of 6 their first year, and carved out a massive territory in Slough Creek, primarily occupying First Meadow and denning at Aspen Heights. They were then named the Troublemaker's pack, a name that would become more and more fitting over the years.

When the pups emerged, there were 2 females and 4 males. They were named Opera, Tapdance, Queue, Jester, Ferret, and Fluffy respectively.

Queue was the runt of the litter, and was not long for the world, easily being scooped up by an eagle before he even had a chance to grow.

The breeding pair were bold, but inexperienced, and after the loss of their first pup became a bit more attentive.

Their attentiveness would become important when Tapdance fell ill not long after.

Trouble spent many days and nights curled up near the tiny pup while Mischief went out hunting and upkeeping the territory.

Despite the pair's best efforts, Tapdance did not survive her illness.

The illness seemed to spread, first to Jester - whom Trouble doted over quite a bit - and then to Ferret.

Trouble all but halted his expeditions away from their den, leaving all the hunting to Mischief and only leaving to mark the territory when stranger wolves got a little too curious.

Jester recovered from his illness, only to be killed by a rival pack taking advantage of the pair's weakening borders.

Ferret was not long behind, and he passed from his illness.

With only Opera and Fluffy left, the pair became much more vigilant with predator attacks, keeping watch before sending the pups into the den.

When summer was fast approaching, the pair took delight in hunting and bringing back newborn calves and fawns for their two pups, and it wasn't long before they decided to move the pups to their summer rendezvous site.

They went to sleep - and whether they intended to move in the morning, or if it was decided after the day's events is unclear. However, immediately before the move, Fluffy was attacked and killed by a rival pack.

After chasing the strangers away, they took their last surviving pup, Opera, to the rendezvous site.

With only one pup to care for, the duo spent a lot of time playing and caring for her - and it wasn't long before she was large enough to move on.

Opera survived until next year and became Troublemakers 2F, and would help raise her siblings next year.

Year 2

Trouble and Mischief returned again next year to Slough Creek, this time denning near McBride Creek. Opera, now a 1-year old wolf, mainly spent time with the new litter of six, letting her parents deal with the hunting and upkeep of territory.

Mischief produced a litter of three females and three males, named Ivy, Harley, Selina, Motley, Balloon, and Pantaloon.

Trouble doted especially on Harley, one of the two runts of the litter (along with Balloon), who had a near pure black coat.

The pack had less trouble with territory this year, their experience starting to show.

But experience isn't everything, and Trouble's favorite daughter, Harley fell dangerously ill. Trouble spent his every waking moment with his daughter, but the illness was too much for the little runt.

When researchers examined her body however, it was found she wasn't a runt after all, just a little smaller than her siblings.

Shortly after this death, the parents moved them to a new den, not far from their first den.

Illness was rampant this year, and some time after moving to the new den Motley, Ivy, and Pantaloon also fell ill.

While the pups were still ill, the parents moved them to a rendezvous site, possibly hoping to help the little ones recover.

The parents seemed overwhelmed, bringing food back, spending time with their sick pups, and still maintaining their territory.

Big sister Opera to the rescue, spent all her time with her younger siblings, and both Motley and Pantaloon eventually recovered - weak but alive.

But not before the same illness took their sister Ivy.

It was not immediately clear what had become of the pups, as all the pups were mostly weak and out of sight. But it is thought that Ivy died a fair while before the other two recovered, and it was only discovered when Ivy did not reemerge with her siblings.

The pups were very large by this point, even with their illness, and having survived the year, Motley, Balloon, Pantaloon and Selina were named 2M, 3M, 4M, and 3F respectively.

They would go on to help raise pups next year in Opera's stead, who then dispersed.

Year 3

The pack moved slightly to the east this year, denning near Second Meadow.

Now 5 and 6 years old respectively, Trouble and Mischief only had a litter of five puppies this year.

Three girls, Vex, Larks, and Trix; and two boys, Abbott and Costello. Larks was thought to be a runt, but it was later decided she was just a little smaller than the others.

Now with experience on their side, as well as the help of their four pups from last year, the Troublemakers pack boasted a huge territory, and thoroughly examined each den available to them before choosing a rather open one in Second Meadow.

The pack easily chased away a number of predators and rival wolves, and managed to maintain their territory seemingly with ease. It seems that the two had settled into the perfect balance between youth and experience, and this was by far their golden year.

But not even the most experienced wolves can be on top of it all. After a large number of predator attacks, one finally succeeded. An eagle swiped Costello right out from under Trouble's nose. He'd wandered too far from the den, and Trouble was seemingly just a meter too far away to ward the bird off.

Abbott and Trix, the other two nearly black pups were sorely affected by the loss of their buddy, and Vex stepped up to become Abbott's new playmate.

Despite the loss, the rest of the pups grew alarmingly fast under the watchful eyes of the six adults watching them, and were soon moved a short distance North to their rendezvous site.

This year was plentiful, and newborn calves and fawns were everywhere. It seemed every time one of the adults returned to the pups, they had a calf or fawn in tow. The breeding pair took down a number of elk throughout the year, and could largely focus on spending time with and growing their pups.

Sickness came and affected seemingly all of the pack. Vex, Trix, and Abbott - the new trio - all fell ill around the same time.

The pups were nearly fully grown at this point, and the pack diverted its attention away from maintaining territory to watching over the little ones.

While they were still sick, a grizzly bear came, rushing in before the pups had a chance to hide, scattering them every which way. Only Trouble, Mischief, and Selina were at the site when it happened, and the three of them struggled to scare the bear off.

The bear picked up Abbott, only to drop him a moment later as Mischief thwarted him. Then the bear nearly carried off Vex - already 20 pounds at this point - before Trouble threw himself into harms way to protect her, taking a nasty blow to the face. The bear went for Abbott again, confusing the two parents as they tried to herd their pups back to safety. If not for Selina, and the returning Motley, the bear might have made off with the pup.

Wounded from the fight, hunting became harder for the pack. The newborn ungulates were now with their herds and harder for the injured adults to pick off.

Trouble especially, was noticeably slower and had trouble even hunting hares.

Trix barely recovered from her illness, Abbott recovered a bit later looking a bit better than his sister, but Vex didn't make it. She was well over 20 pounds by the time she died, and would have made it if she could have hung on a little longer.

And so, Abbott grew up without his other playmate, with only Trix and Larks to keep him company.

Larks, Trix, and Abbot became Troublemakers 4F, 5F, and 5M respectively, and would go on to help their parents raise the next litter.

Year 4

Motley, Balloon, Pantaloon, and Selina are nowhere to be seen this year, apparently having dispersed over the winter.

The first time Trouble is spotted back in Slough Creek, he's noticeably worse for wear. Now 6 years old, he's showing his age, and he returns sporting a massive limp.

It's unclear whether his wounds from the bear attack last year have become infected and worsened, or if over the winter he gained a new injury.* But the wolf had a hard time getting his footing this year, and took a smaller territory than usual, this time settling once again near First Meadow, just north of Saddle Meadows.

The pack has five new pups this year. Three females, Thief, Assassin, and Rouge; and two males, Penn and Teller.

Penn is obviously a runt, and emerges from the den incredibly ill. The adults seem to think him a goner and pay him little mind, feeding the other pups away from him and not spending much time with the runt.

After resting it up over the winter until the pups emerge, Trouble doesn't look much better, and fails to hunt a weakened elk with his pack. He's instead forced to scavenge a bison carcass and fight coyotes and cougars for the scraps.

Trouble goes through a few periods of looking better, only to reinjure himself again and again. It seems he's beginning to feel his age and he can't quite keep up with his health anymore.

Attempting to live up to his name, even in his old age, Trouble and Mischief get themselves into a bit of a bind as they attempt to steal territory out from under the noses of their rivals. Having been caught in enemy territory, the two flee with their tails between their legs, barely escaping the much younger wolves.

Despite his parents' neglect, Penn recovers on his own, and the pack seems to accept him into the fold again - allowing him to eat and play with the other pups. Although Trouble still gives him a bit of a cold shoulder, he seems to have warmed up to his small son a bit.

While under the pack's watchful eye, Teller wanders off as an eagle eyes him up as prey. Trouble keeps the wandering pup close by, but loses sight of him just as the eagle swoops. A quick reaction from Trouble saves the pup, but only just barely.

After an unsuccessful raid on the den, Trouble takes it upon himself to harass the Crevice Lake pack out of part of their territory. The rival pack backs off, giving Trouble the space to recover more from his injuries.

With Trouble's health mostly in better shape, the pack manages a successful elk hunt, promising brighter skies ahead for the pack.

But his leg is clearly still bothering him as May turns to June and the pups become more and more rambunctious for the aging pair.

June 5th, while out hunting, Trouble hears Mischief howl out for him. She's away from the den. Trouble meanders over there, possibly assuming she was hunting.

Mischief as well as the yearlings Larks and Trix were engaged in battle with the Junction Butte pack. Trouble, though injured, joined in, and chased the wolves off.

However, just as they howled out in victory, three more Junction Butte wolves, including the alpha male, ambushed the pack.

The Troublemakers pack were forced to flee, Trouble barely able to limp away from the dishonorable attack.

The whole pack was in poor shape, sleeping off their grievous wounds. They awoke to another vicious attack, this time from the Prospect Peak alpha male. It seemed that the other packs were eager to take advantage of the weakness of the pack that had caused them so much headache in the past.

On top of it all, Assassin fell ill. The cherry on top of a horrible 24 hours for the Troublemakers pack.

Trouble spent the next day limping around, never straying too far from the den. Abbot brought two newborn elk back to his father and siblings, allowing Trouble to recover what little strength he had left.

The next day, the pack left their den site for a rendezvous site a little lower ground, where they spent the afternoon napping near Assassin, who grew weaker and weaker. Finally, after a long rest in the sun, surrounded by her pack, she recovered. Barely looking alive, but moving around and recovering nonetheless.

Mischief seemed to take a special interest in Penn, pulling him away from the others to sit near him herself. The rest of the pack has warmed up to him too, no longer seeing him as a vulnerable creature, liable to die at any moment.

The pack spent June recovering, and luckily their rivals seemed to leave them alone for a bit. The pack brought back many calves and fawns for the pups.

On the last day of observation, a bear came and tried to make off with a pup or two, but the parents were quick to notice and kept its jaws off of Teller, who was exposed. The bear ran off, but left Trouble yet again with life-threatening injuries. It almost seemed that Trouble had died, but he clung on to his last shred of life to protect his pups.

Despite the year's incredible harshness to the Troublemakers pack, for the first time they didn't lose a single pup. All five survived the year, becoming 6F, 6M, 7F, 8F, and 7M.

If Trouble ends up making it another year around, he'll certainly need the help of his pups, especially since Mischief will be 8 years old next year. Even if Trouble makes it, he may not be with the same old Mischief he's come to rely on these past four years...

---

*The real reason for Trouble's injuries:
Spoiler
Show
I actually jumped Trouble off a cliff by accident early in the game, and didn't bother resetting. It took a SIGNIFICANT portion of his health, and I had trouble regaining that health time and time again. But it makes for a fun story, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
We're now caught up with the year I'm currently working on. It's almost finished so expect it soon. But then it will be a moment before I can get Year 6 out as it hasn't even started yet.

After that, we'll move onto Trouble's MANY pups. They'll be on Ironwolf, so I don't expect them to live nearly as long as Trouble. Trouble actually died 3 or 4 times over the course of this log, so it's possible the lives of his pups may be brutal and short.

Year 5

With the help of the massive surviving previous litter, the aging Trouble and Mischief were able to carve out a decently sized territory. The pack denned on the coast of McBride lake.

In may, five pups emerged. Four girls and one very large male. They were named Vi, Eris, Jinx, Loki, and Mayhem respectively.

The pack started the year off strong, taking down a number of elk over the course of the month under the watchful eyes of their parents.

Despite her old age, Mischief didn't seem too worse for wear, still nipping at the heel of the elk as her family brought it down. Even Trouble seemed recovered from last year's ailments, directing the hunt with relative ease.

Predators seemed few and far between, the only dangers willing to face a den surrounded by wolves being a rival pack, taking advantage of the yearlings being out and about. However, even the aging pair could frighten them off before they could get too close.

All seemed well with the pack until little Jinx fell dangerously ill. She seemed so weak she could barely stand.

The parents stayed by her side day and night while the yearlings hunted. As if sensing weakness, predators began snooping about the den. First rival wolves, which ran off without too much fuss once the pups were inside. Then a cougar, which scattered the pups every which way in a panic.

Eris and Vi made their way into the den, but Loki, Mayhem, and Jinx were caught outside. Loki and Mayhem ran every which way, but Jinx barely made it 10 meters away from the den - even in all the panic.

Trouble and Mischief chased the cougar back and forth across the den, each pass the cougar neared another pup, but with the parents too close behind for it to grab one. Eventually the cougar was warded off, and Trouble and Mischief were left to collect their wandering pups.

Trouble spent a sleepless night watching over Jinx, not closing his eyes for more than a moment until dawn, when he finally allowed himself some sleep.

In the afternoon, he left the den for a short while, returning only long enough to pick up Jinx and signal the rest of his family to follow him. It was moving day. Perhaps he hoped that a change of scenery would help the sickly pup.

They didn't move a great distance, still within sight of McBride lake. However the den chosen was within spitting distance of an entire elk herd. While Trouble got the pups situated, his yearlings brought down an elk just on the other side of the hill, bringing back fresh meat for the pups.

Trouble spent the rest of the daylight sitting with Jinx, the little pup couldn't even stand anymore, her breaths coming hard and fast. Before the sun had set, her chest stilled, and she slowly slumped over. Trouble sniffed her slowly, letting out a sorrowful howl and finally allowing himself to sleep.

The night brought a blizzard, turning Yellowstone as white as winter until the sunrise. The pack seemed sluggish, possibly from the wicked cold, possibly from the loss of one of their own.

They didn't stay out long, only enough to patrol part of their territory. The yearlings were bringing chunks of meat from the elk kill to the pups, although they were still a little too young for such things.

The cold weather would continue, and ultimately, so would regular life at the den.

The pups grew large quickly, and soon it would be time to take the pups to a rendezvous site. But Mischief would not join them. On the morning when the pups were ready to move to the site, Mischief did not wake up. Trouble spent the morning curled up beside his mate, before taking their little family across McBride lake to a small site.

The pups were demoralized, and Mayhem was looking around the outskirts of the site, as if waiting for Mischief to come home too.

Trouble spent a short time with the pups before wandering off. He returned hours later with a stranger, a 4-year old silver wolf researchers named Folly. Mayhem, Loki, and Vi took to Folly right away, but Eris seemed a bit distant. The yearlings too seemed wary of Trouble's new mate.

The summer settled into an uncomfortable silence. The absence of Mischief was painfully obvious, but Folly did her best to care for the pack. Her youthful spirit almost making her more of an older sister than a replacement to the yearlings.

And her speed and youth was evident. She dragged Trouble into hairbrained schemes, reminding researchers of his younger days.

He seemed happy enough, but with that tense spirit of age and loss weighing over him.

Folly did prove to be a bold and protective pseudo mother when a bear came to attack the pups. Taking a rather hefty blow to the shoulder as Trouble stood growling over the hidden pups, Folly faced the bear head on. Eventually the two were able to ward the bear off as some of the yearlings returned.

The pack kept up with the care of their pups and the upkeep of their territory. On the last day of observation, Mayhem and Eris seemed a little unwell, however researchers assume they recovered as shortly after the pack left with all four pups in tow.

Vi, Eris, Loki, and Mayhem became 9F, 10F, 11F, and 8M respectively.

---

And now we've reached beyond the point where Mischief can follow. Trouble will not survive his 8th year, and Folly will be left to carry on his legacy.

Year 6

Trouble, Folly, and Trouble's yearlings established themselves strong this year. Trouble was noticeably slower, mostly letting the younger wolves carve out the large chunk of territory for him.

Him and Folly had four pups, two female, two male. They were named Luna, Trivia, Data, and Ruckus respectively. Trivia and Data were near identical both in coat and in size, with light tan coats. The other two were both grey, with Luna slightly darker than Ruckus.

Folly proved herself to be a valuable asset, throwing herself into motherhood full force. She fought off a boar grizzly from a kill, which could have easily killed her, just to get meals for her pups. She caught hares to bring back to the pups, even if she was full. Perhaps she didn't realize that pups this young couldn't eat from carcasses just yet?

Ruckus particularly seemed to be a mama's boy, following her around outside the den whenever there wasn't food to eat.

All was well in June until one of the twins fell ill. Data awoke less than his usual self one morning, prompting Trouble to immediately turn about full face.

Trouble spent over 12 hours in the den, only leaving when his mate warned him of stranger wolves or bears approaching. But still he did not emerge.

On one of these occasions, a second boar grizzly came to attack the den.

The parents were alone, the yearlings out hunting while the adults watched over sick little data. They growled and bit, attempting to frighten the lumbering beast away.

Trouble kept his distance, having his own terrible experiences with bears in the past. But Folly was bold, her new maternal instincts demanding she put herself between the threat and her pups.

Before Trouble had a chance to react to what was happening, Folly fell.

He rushed in, trying to save his already lost mate, but in doing so, he took a direct blow to the face.

He staggered back a bit, dazed.

The bear had backed off a bit, suddenly a bit more cautious by the wolf's boldness.

Trouble didn't allow himself to appear weak, growling and circling the threat, but it was clear that he couldn't take on a mosquitto, let alone the bear.

But the bluff worked, and the bear began backing off.

Trouble didn't let up, chasing the bear away as far as his legs would carry him.

He limped back to the den, and curled up around his young mate, dazed and stuggling to keep his head up.

The squeak of young pups alerted him that Folly's children were out of the den.

He shooed them inside and followed shortly after. No wolves were seen for 16 hours.

When they did emerge, Data was among them. He looked weary, but he'd survived the illness.

Trouble was in disastrous shape. He could barely run, forcing him to limp around his territory in desperation.

He returned with a much younger black Avalanche female, a 3-year old collared dispersal dubbed Shadow.

She was inexperienced, but eager. And Trouble frankly didn't have the options he once did.

The pups reluctantly accepted her, Data being the only one to really bond with her. Mama's boy Ruckus didn't seem too eager, and wandered away from her with Luna. And Trivia straight up tried to leave the den, possibly to look for Folly.

The yearlings weren't excited about the turn of events either, and kept their distance.

But pack life had to continue, and Trouble would not be able to raise these pups without a mate.

The pups had to be fed, and they would be - although it was a question for some time.

Both the twins, but Trivia especially, were pushed around when food was scarce. And the competition did her no favors as she fell ill. The next day, Luna also appeared ill.

Trouble spent some time with the girls, but also spent time hunting hares to recover his own strength.

After chasing a rival wolf away, Trouble pressed his luck, stealing back weakened territory from them and tempting fate by biting the wolf once more. He very nearly did not return, and all his recovery was lost.

Even ignoring his wounds, Trouble begins looking worse for wear. The whole pack seems sluggish from the loss of Folly, but Trouble especially is hurting.

He stays in the den with the pups most of the day, letting the younger wolves handle things like hunting and territory.

Neither Trivia nor Luna made it.

Shortly after, Trouble moved his two remaining pups to a new den, a little west of their old den, and began bringing them newborn calves and fawns.

Shadow was a less energetic hunter than either Mischief or Folly, sticking to Trouble's side more often than not. She was dutiful and attentive, but never bold or outgoing.

Ruckus and Data were ready for the rendezvous site in no time once they could start eating off of carcasses.

Trouble scouted out the site before bringing his family over. Data wanted to stay and wandered off in the direction of their den rather than following his pack. Trouble scooped him up in no time though and they were on their way.

Trouble led the pups, Shadow brought up the rear, and the yearlings kept watch either side. With such an escort, nothing could go wrong.

The yearlings brought two elk calves to the site, and Trouble could spent his days and nights resting with the pups as they grew bigger and bigger.

He ventured out now and again, but it was clear he was tired.

The pups grew closer and closer to 20 pounds, and it almost seemed that Trouble would live another year. But it was not to be.

Stranger wolves attacked the den, and Trouble gave it his all to keep his pups safe, just for a little longer.

But they wore him down, and he couldn't escape them forever. They killed him, and with two-against-one, managed to kill little Data too.

Shadow took the yearlings and Ruckus away to hunt over the fall the very next day.

The pack disbanded after, with the yearlings dispersing, and no breeding male to assume the position.

---

Darn, I was really hoping for that peaceful death. It continues to elude me even now.

The pups were literally 0.2 pounds away from 20. The only explanation for Data's death is that the wolves must have killed him.

Next post will be a summary of ALL of Trouble's living children. I'm very bad at guessing pup personalities, so a lot of the info will just be made up so I have something to put down.

After that? Well, I want to play all of them at least through their first hunt, and then decide which I will follow along with. There are a LOT of pups, so I don't think I'll be able to follow all of them unless a significant portion die during their hunts - which isn't impossible, but I also don't want to deliberately kill any of them via negligence.

Pup profiles coming soon, pup follow-ups coming... eventually...

Summary of Trouble's children, and pup profiles. All Ironwolves and have already finished their first hunts - or died trying. Any Player Character wolf with a radio collar I intend to play through Slough Creek with.

Sorry for the long wait for this. I wound up playing all of them through Amethyst Mountain and it took longer than I anticipated.

---

Trouble had 27 total pups with Mischief, 17 of which survived to adulthood. Of those 17, they had 10 females and 7 males.

He had 4 pups total with Folly, 1 male of which survived.

"Opera" Troublemakers 2F
As the only survivor of her parent's first litter, Opera became an attentive young wolf, aware of her surroundings and alert to danger. She stayed to care for her parents second litter, and stayed dutifully by the side of Motley, Ivy, and Pantaloon when they fell ill and managed to save the two boys. Despite her survival nature, she has poor health, but is a little faster and stronger. She has a whiny, raspy voice which she loves to use.

Opera took her time beginning her search for elk, nipping several calves before deciding they were not worth the chase. On her third try, she seemed close, but at the last moment was attacked and chased away by female dispersals, forcing her to give up the hunt. She rested near a carcass to regain her health, but was awoken by a mama grizzly, who didn't even give her time to flee before taking the lone survivor's life.
Spoiler
Show
(Opera HAD been tagged with a collar for further study, but I guess fate had other plans. I wanted to find her a mate named Yodel! It would have been cute!)
"Motley" Troublemakers 2M
Motley is a rambunctious sort of wolf, with a surprisingly mellow howl. He lost two littermates to illness, and recovered from illness himself. He's brazen towards smaller predators like coyotes, and even tests his luck towards cougars and other wolves. His health isn't stellar, but he can run for a fair while before getting tired.

Motley hunted his elk with ease, seemingly picking just the right ones and skirting rival wolves' territories to stay out of trouble. He had one brief encounter with the Wapiti pack inside Lamar Canyon territory, which he ignored in favor of his hunt. He fed off his kill for several days until a boar grizzly snuck up behind him while sleeping and he skedaddled as fast as his little legs could carry him. After a few more days rest, he found a curious mate for himself, a Hayden female named Enigma. She already had a radio collar from another study of wolf behavior - and hers sure was odd: confident but shy, playful but serious, and a bit of a loner.

"Balloon" Troublemakers 3M
Balloon is the runt of his litter, and as such inherited his fathers terrible health, poor strength, and his mothers poor stamina. His only saving grace is his speed, zipping around just a little faster than the other wolves. His poor health resulted in a moderate mange infection which he is still battling. Balloon seems a bit more timid, only going after prey he's confident in catching. His howl is just a litter higher pitched than normal, as if he's just recovering from breathing in some helium.

Being the runt is hard, and no exceptions here for Balloon. He scavenged off several kills, avoided the ire of a boar grizzly, and even frightened off a trio of coyotes long enough to get a taste of moose calf. His cautious nature saw him from herd to herd of elk before getting to one he even had a chance of taking down. He was very close to talking the calf down before a stray hit from mom sent Balloon to the ground. He did not get back up.

(Yet another wolf I intended on playing dead. This one was entirely my fault. I should have given up on the elk, but it was very close to death so I pushed a little further. Balloon also was very close to death.)
"Pantaloon" Troublemakers 4M
Pantaloon is a much more reddish wolf than his golden counterpart Balloon. He has some scarring on his face, indicating his much bolder personality. While he doesn't deliberately put himself in danger, he's not afraid to experiment and push himself a litter harder. He's just like his father, with terrible health and poor strength, but has exceptional speed instead of stamina and only decent stamina. He has a fairly mellow howl most of the time, with a slightly squeakier howl for communication with his pack.

Pantaloon took a few tries at teasing the elk before settling on his targets. He nipped a number of elk of all sorts, calf, cow, and spike. He managed to down two weaker calves - one of which in enemy territory - before resting it up. He found himself a real firecracker of a mate when he woke up next to his kill only to find her and a cougar. The two of them chased it off together and soon decided to give it a try. It took him several days before he could prove himself to her enough. She was bold, energetic, and a loner. She could barely keep still when there was prey available to chase. She was named Spitfire and they left for Slough Creek together.

"Selina" Troublemakers 3F
Selina is a very middle-of-the-road type wolf, with no exceptional traits physically. She's a crafty wolf, and knows how to stay out of trouble. She has such a funky set of howls, almost imitating other animals such as an owl or a coyote.

Selina spent many days hunting hares, stealing them out from under eagles and coyotes. As months went on though, it appeared this was all she did. She rarely went after elk at all, and when she did, actually making a kill did not appear to be on the two year old's mind. Instead she chased the elk about, nipping at each of their heels for miles until seemingly growing bored and moving on. She did come close to a few kills, but always getting herself too injured to continue and backing off. She finally did manage to steal the kills of other wolves, and pick off two elk calves. One of the wolves she stole a kill from, a Rosebud male, would wind up becoming her serious and lonesome mate, Robin.

"Larks" Troublemakers 4F
Having been born in Trouble and Mischief's golden year, as well as being the only pup not affected by illness, Larks became quite the curious wolf, interested in exploring and sniffing out everything around her. She has a decent little trot, but suffers slightly from her father's poor health. She howls with a single tone, slightly lower or higher depending on what she's howling for.

Larks found herself fairly lucky, her curious bites at the heels of calves finding several weak members and allowing herself to prove her worth early on in her journey. She spent the rest of her time at Amethyst Mountain exploring and hunting with her mate, Magpie. She offered the all black wolf a sample from her pile of snowshoe hares, before showing off her other kills. The two of them spent time hunting, and howling, and chasing other predators off their kills before making their way towards Slough Creek.

"Trix" Troublemakers 5F
Trix has been known to patrol a large area she's claimed as her own. Stubborn and territorial even before having a chance to establish herself, she's not afraid to pick fights with other wolves if she thinks she has a chance of winning - a potentially dangerous trait with her awful health once again inherited from her father. She has decent speed and stamina to patrol her areas (or make a hasty retreat when she's gone too far). Her main howl is just like her father's (incredibly standard sounding), but her second howl is barely audible to human ears.

Trix started her life as an adult wolf incredibly lucky. She zeroed in on an injured elk calf and took it down with little injury to herself. But she let this pride get to her head, and went after another injured elk calf immediately, without giving herself a chance to rest. The calf was very injured, and had she given herself that rest first, she likely would have made that kill. But she had to limp back to her first kill, injured and alone. She spent the next few days recovering, before making her second kill and setting off in search of a mate. She found her mate in an older shy Cinnabar male with a floppy right ear - already tagged by another research team. We named this wolf Carfax, and he seemed to be eager to prove himself. Despite being a bit cold shouldered to Larks at first, the two of them got along famously, and set off in search of a home of their own.

"Abbott" Troublemakers 5M
Abbott and Trix could be twins with their dark grey coats. Who knows if Costello would also have shared their appearance like they did as pups. Abbott is fast, but lacks his health and strength. After the loss of two of his close playmates, Abbott is a bit more closed off. Slow to warm up to others and immensely suspicious of other wolves. Like Trix, his main howl is just like his father's, but his second howl is a little more timid - as if he's cautious to call others towards him.

Like his twin Trix, Abbott found himself incredibly lucky in his first hunt - taking down an elk calf with a broken leg with flawless ease - and then immediately getting himself in over his own head. But he recovered quickly, and quickly finding himself a Beartooth female who was willing to give the shy male a chance. His older mate, Marilyn, wasn't overly bold or excitable, but was a good steady partner for Abbott. It took them a little longer to warm up to each other, but soon they were defending their kills from competitors and heading north.

"Thief" Troublemakers 6F
Thief wound up with a bright golden coat unsuitable for any sort of burglary. She has a dark spot under one of her eyes that may be result of an injury there or just a part of her natural coloring. She has acceptable speed and stamina, but lacks in other areas. Having grown up while her father was severely injured, she seems to have adopted a more dainty personality, slinking about before diving in full force. But when she dives in, she dives all the way in, only stopping when forced to. She has a low-toned, quiet howl.

Thief had a rough start to her adulthood. Living up to her name, she stole prey from coyotes, eagles, and of course other wolves. Following her instinct into the heart of Wapiti territory, Thief found herself fleeing with her life barely still in her possession. Taking some time to recover, but still not ever fully stopping her thievery. Stealing a kill from dispersal wolves made in Junction Butte territory, she traveled back and forth from this kill for a few days while she recovered. But upon returning to the kill for the final time, she caught sight of a panicked herd of elk and went in for the steal. However, stealing from a rival pack right from under their noses proved to be a poor choice, and she escaped with nothing but a broken leg for her trouble. Taking time to recover and living off stolen hares, she eventually recovered and made the first kill that was truly alone. And in doing so, found another little thief in the night, her Burglar. Thief and Burglar bonded over her kill, and became fairly close, soon heading to steal some territory for themselves.

"Penn" Troublemakers 6M
Penn grew up with incredible endurance, but very poor health - much like his father. He's bold, but not nearly as bold as his parents, more careful about sustaining injuries he can't easily recover from. He's willing to charge into many situations, but will retreat if he takes too many hits. He has surprisingly high pitched howls, his social howl so high humans can barely hear it.

Penn managed quite well on his own, largely managing to avoid conflicts with rival wolves until it was time to find a mate. Having accidentally tried to court 3 male Lamar Canyon wolves - quite unsuccessfully. Eventually he paired with a 2-year old silver Canyon wolf named Sword.

"Teller" Troublemakers 7M
Much like Penn, Teller is slightly reserved wolf with a sense of humor. He likes to wittle away at his opponents and be a cheeky little jerk when the situation calls for it. He has decent strength and speed, but poor endurance and health. He has a long, dignified howl, the second much higher than the first.

Teller managed to pull weak elk calves out of the herd like it was nothing, and soon found himself cheekily stealing territory from the Wapiti pack. He seemed to find himself smitten with a Wapiti female, who he tried to woo desperately. But perhaps trying to flirt with the pack you just stole territory from is not the wisest idea, and she wanted no part in him, sending him off with an injured leg. He didn't give up however and followed her well into Lamar Canyon territory, only to meet a Lamar female who was interested in him. At first he ignored her, still trying to woo his Wapiti crush. But after being chased off a third time, he accepted his loss, and bonded with the Lamar female. However their love was to be brief, as a band of rouge Pakasha males came and injured his mate, killing Teller. It is suspected that the Lamar female also died in this encounter. (Lamar 4F)

"Assassin" Troublemakers 7F
Assassin wound up as a very tan wolf, with exceptional speed, but below average health and stamina. She has a slightly whimsical and aloof personality, sometimes wandering into trouble without realizing it. She has an airy howl.

Assassin, despite her aloof nature, came in like a professional hitman, diving into the heart Wapiti territory and making a kill. She lived off this kill for a couple nights, then made a new kill just West of the Lamar Canyon territory. Leveraging this kill, she called out to any wolf that would hear her. First, she accidentally made contact with three different Wapiti females, who were not amused by her antics. But then she did something unusual. She followed the howls of the Lamar Canyon wolves straight into their heartland and proceeded to court the alpha male in front of his three yearlings. The lead female died sometime during the last season, leaving Lamar 1M, aka "Mr. Boss" alone. Having entwined herself into a mafia-esque romance, Assassin and Mr. Boss seemed to hit it off, and our little wolf gained a unique advantage over her siblings. Assassin has been tagged for further research.

OOC note:
Spoiler

Actually both Lamar 1M and 1F were there, so I guess Assassin is just a homewrecker. But that doesn't make much sense for realistic gameplay, so I'm just pretending that 1F was actually one of his daughters. I didn't realize the alphas would be courtable, whoops. I think technically the 1M and 1F aren't considered alphas in the game code, but by naming conventions they should be, and it makes it much more interesting when you have a rivalry with one of the alphas in Slough Creek.
"Rouge" Troublemakers 8F
Rouge is possibly the only one of the three sisters to live up to her name. Rouge is a stealthy little wolf, sneaking in while she knows others are away to hunt or steal territory. She avoids direct confrontation most of the time, but will defend her kills if necessary. She's very speedy with decent endurance, but like her father has very poor health and less than ideal strength. She has a long low howl like an air-raid siren, and a short high howl like a coyote.

Despite her cautious nature, Rouge is not immune to poor luck or bad hunts, and her first night away from her pack left her in bad shape after a hunt turned sour. Bruised ribs and a broken leg left her on the down and outs for nearly a week. She spent a lot of time recovering off and on over the course of the autumn, but eventually proved herself and bonded with another black wolf researchers named Requiem - who had previously tagged for unrelated research - for his low and mournful howl.

"Vi" Troublemakers 9F
Vi is a black wolf with a small patch of lighter color on her chest. She's a fighter, and always seems to be sizing up her opponents. She's not afraid of other wolves - dispersal or rival - and isn't afraid to walk up to them and show them what's for. She has incredible speed on her side, but like the rest of her family, suffers from very poor health. She has a quirky little howl to call other wolves to her.

Vi's aggressive strategy pays off early, as she doesn't back down from a herd of elk until she's bitten every calf there, eventually circling back to her first pick and takes it down with only a minor injury to her leg. Similarly she hunted down another with ease, stealing the show from the Prospect Peak males who'd previously been chasing the herd. She made an impression on one of the males, and took a no-nonsense approach towards wooing him over. She hunted a little with the male, but ran into trouble when it came time to defend her kill. While attempting to frighten the strange wolves off, she got dogpiled and couldn't escape. Her would-be mate, however, did manage to escape with his life. (Prospect Peak 4M)

"Eris" Troublemakers 10F
Eris is a slow-going wolf, taking time to enjoy the finer things in life - like naps and food. She prefers to camp a kill for many days, rather than feeding off it and moving on. She's wary of other wolves, and will avoid confrontation if at all possible. Unlike most of her family, she doesn't spend her time darting around Yellowstone at full speed, instead taking her time to lope quietly from napping spot to napping spot. She's a bit stronger than most of her family, but doesn't have the same endurance as them. She has a wobbling howl, both long and short.

Eris found herself incredibly lucky on her own, finding and waiting out the kills of others to get herself a meal. Even hunting on her own seemed a breeze, taking down two calves with not any severe injury to herself. She announced her presence and let the boys come to her. She found herself surrounded by a trio of males from an unknown pack. She expressed interest in two of the 4-year old males, eventually bonding with the more brown of the brothers. She spent a few weeks relaxing and living off of her kills before the two left in winter to establish territory. This male was named Oberon. Eris has been tagged for further research.

"Loki" Troublemakers 11F
Loki is a fascinating specimen. She gets herself into the strangest places and shows no fear of humans - a dangerous trait indeed. She's incredibly curious and loves to chew on sticks, bones, and... human trash. She suffers from terrible health, but has better speed and strength. She has a high pitched howl, one barely audible to humans.

Loki did not have the excessive luck of some of her siblings, having a hard time getting her footing on her own. She managed a number of small kills, but frequently ran into confrontations with rival packs. She spent most of her time in the Lamar valley, hunting hares and getting into trouble with the locals. When it was time to look for a mate, she called out to the heavens and waited for a response. The response came from the top of Lamar Overlook. She scaled the steep cliffs with vigor, trying to find her true love. The response had come from a pair of 8-Mile males, one of which was the subject of her affection. She took him out to hunt hares and bond before leaving to carve out a territory of their own. The male was named Svadilfari - or Svad for short. Loki has been tagged with a radio collar for further study.

"Mayhem" Troublemakers 8M
Mayhem, the largest of his litter, has a surprising speed, and shares his family's terrible terrible health. He's curious and adventurous, seemingly curious about other wolf packs no matter the danger. He has a echo-y, hollow howl.

Mayhem lives up to his name, biting every member of a herd before plowing it face first into another herd to start biting them. He manages to stay clear of rival packs, which certainly helps him survive his overly curious nose, and presents his kills to a surprisingly calm dispersal named Harmony. They bond over another hunt, and set off to steal territory from their rivals.

"Ruckus" Troublemakers 9M
Ruckus was the only surviving pup of Folly's. He witnessed the death of both his mother to a bear and his playmate when they were just about to learn to hunt. He's become incredibly cautious of other wolves, and seems to be terrified of bears. Despite his name, he's become quite the mild-mannered wolf with better health than most of his family, but just as weak. He has a loud howl for declaring territory, but a slightly more anxious howl for communication.

Despite his nervous and slow-going nature, Ruckus found himself in the middle of a large herd of elk early on, and apparently not one to turn down an opportunity, managed to take down two elk. He soon thereafter met a lone female dispersal, who was also a little shy. They took their time wandering the mountain and bonding. They were on their way to a hunt to seal the deal when they ran into an aggressive pack of dispersal males. Ruckus tried to defend his mate, but his attention soon turned to survival when they pinned him, breaking his foreleg. It was very nearly the end for Ruckus, but the two of them managed to escape. Spending the rest of the time healing and recovering, they had plenty of time to bond, and soon left for their own territory - shaken and their mistrust of other wolves only stronger. The female was named Mist.
