Slough Creek Journal

Post by -Wolfdog- » Sat Jan 02, 2021 4:51 pm

I've decided to create a brief journal documenting my wolves' Slough Creek adventures. Because why not. (Not the actual in-game dates, well aware that the pups were born in April). I'm really curious about your wolves' quests and hardships as well.

December 30th
  • Lumi & Abnus travel to Slough Creek after finishing up a bison meal. When they arrived they promptly got to work on claiming territory. 11 or so hexes were claimed along with 1 den discovered, however this den was too close to enemy territory.
December 31st
  • Lumi & Abnus continue to claim territory. They gradually expanded further north, and eventually discovered 5 more dens and located plentiful elk herds within the area. Lumi created a shelter underneath a large boulder/cliff where she whelped 5 puppies, 4 males and 1 female. Regis (M), Lunbis (M), Abni (F), Lupine (M), and Lobo (M). For the sake of backstory, [wolfdog] was attached at the end of their names.
    • January 1st
      • The pups really pushed Lumi as they rapidly grew, as she never managed to get full sleep since she was a busy bee tending towards the pups, hunting, and going on long patrols with Abnus. Abnus, for the most part, guarded the den from intruders and willingly gave up a lot of meals. On one of Lumi's hunts, she came upon an elk herd. Lumi drove one of the slowest elk to the lake. As the elk was crossing the river bank, Lumi darted to the other side and soon dispatched the cow elk and saved as much food as she could, returning to the carcass every day until it was completely devoured by her or scavengers. Lumi fended off several predators, including prospect peak wolves who managed to cross over.
As the days passed, the fleas worsened. After Lunbis fell ill, she realized she had no choice but to relocate to a better, cleaner, place that was closer to food (in order to spend more time with her sick pup).
        • January 2nd
          • The pack was frolickingg for the most part— well fed pups who were rapidly gaining weight, leftover food, and high territory. But Lunbis still had not recovered and it gravely concerned his parents, as only 30% of health remained. To cut back on trip time, Lumi went after whatever she could find. Fortunately, she stumbled upon a lone mother elk. Lumi knew that the elk was trying to hide something. Successfully evading the elk's sharp hooves, Lumi snatched up an unsuspecting elk calf and brought home a bountiful of food. A day later, Lunbis started to recover. Lumi had briefly neglected her patrolling duties, since, apparently, she was so focused on healing Lunbis. She went on patrol and hunted with Abnus so he could bring back food as well. Along the way, Lumi chased out not 1 but 7 dispersal wolves from her territory and strengthened it with plenty of howling and marking. Abnus helped Lumi bring down a buck mule deer. By this point, the pack was back on its paws.
          January 3rd
          • The pups had gained nearly 20 pounds. The heaviest pup, Lunbis, weighed 17lbs (ironically, the heaviest pup somehow got sick) and even the lightest pup, Lobo weighed 15lbs. The pack was ready to move onto a rendezvous site. While Lumi was hunting for a newborn calf, the clever mother elk led her to a cow moose with a calf instead.. Lumi accepted it and came back home with a large calf. The pups were 2 months old by now, and a rendezvous site seemed like the best course of action to accommodate the growing puppies' needs. Lumi fed the pups and led a 'road trip' (Accompanied with the moose calf carcass for snacks of course) up even further north where she had seen another elk herd. After managing to safely cross a small creek and waiting for the slowest ones to catch up (*eyes Lupine*) Lumi and Abnus came upon their chosen rendezvous site. The pups still demanded more food. Lumi quickly got to work on hunting and patrolling her territory while Abnus guarded. Considering it was calving season, she saw another mother elk hiding her young by pretending to graze.. Lumi could sense the elk watching her. Lumi began to search through tall thickets but to no avail. The calf had been hidden too well. So, being rather opportunistic, Lumi decided to go after the mother elk, and with relative easy took her down since the mother elk refused to move. Just as she was about to head back to the rendezvous site something small caught her eye.. a helpless calf. Not only did Lumi have a supply of food to last her days, but she also caught an elk calf for her wriggling puppies.
          January 4th
          • It was morning. The pups were ravenous, as usual, and the heaviest pups had surpassed 20lbs already. Lumi signaled for her pups to hide while she was away with a gentle woof. At that precise moment, 2 Crevice lake wolves came snarling towards her pups. Lumi and Abnus attempted to chase the wolves away, but they kept on coming back. One of the wolves held Lumi by the neck while the second wolf darted near the tall grass and dense foliage. Abnus chased the wolf away from the site. Lumi finally broke free from the first wolf’s grip. She avoided leading them to her ‘nest’ but pesky Lunbis had snuck out. Quickly, Lumi woofed at the pup to immediately go back inside at once. The 2 parents battled the wolves, who were willing to put up a fight. After an unusually long struggle, the wolves meekly retreated to their territory. Lumi went on a long patrol to patch any ‘leaks’ that were most susceptible to intrusion and brought back regurgitated food from elk calves whose mothers put up a fight. Being satisfied and extremely exhausted, Lumi slept. When she awoke, all of her pups gained 20lbs and were growing too big even for the rendezvous site. Abnus and Lumi knew very well that their family had to make a long trek to a special place called Towerfall..
          END FOR NOW

Hey, this seems really cool! Would you mind if I did this with my wolf Mochi, and her mate-to-be? Of course, I'd set up a different topic.

I'm enjoying reading it so far! I'm relieved to see that the sick pup got healed. One of mine from a previous game was nearly dead from it, and being grabbed by a cougar didn't help, but as we were busy 'loafing', the game finished before they died, which was a relief.

Anyways, I hope that you'll resume documenting your wolves adventures and I hope they all make it!

Haha, thanks. Didn't think anyone would actually like it lol. And by all means, please do document Mochi's adventures! I'd love to read it. ^^

I was thinking of documenting my wolves' entire adventure, from AM to SC, but when I thought of the idea my wolves were already in SC. Someday I'd like to document my wolves journey to Towerfall and beyond though. Who knows, maybe we can start a trend in the WQ community.

That'd be great, haha. I was tempted to do as I did last time and wait until winter before heading to SC and document that, but I just couldn't wait to go get those puppers!

Just wondering, what's been the most stressful thing that's happened so far with your pups in WQ3, in that litter? I like hearing about others' experiences, especially with the pups.

Also, I've finally done the first little bit on my own log!

I'll check your log out soon!
By far the most stressful thing that could happen to my pups is disease, mostly because I know my wolf can do very little about it, and even spending time with the sick pup isn't a guarantee. It's sort of heart breaking to watch your pup slowly decline (sorry if that sounds dark  ). In second place is definitely stranger wolves. They can be relentless and will even attack you at times, it's even more worrisome if it's a 2v1— in that case, usually the first wolf tries to distract me and the second wolf attempts to kill my pups.

Yeah, sickness is awful, the poor pups. Two stressful things for me include moving to a new den and losing pups. And if you put them together, it isn't particularly fun. Here is the lowdown of the first stressful thing to happen during my game, pre-sickness.

Once I was marking territory with the mate guarding the pups, them out of the den due to fleas and I just want them to socialise and keep pack moral from decreasing. I accidentally secondary howl and my mate runs to help me. I don't notice this until I get a notice about all of my pups leaving the den, one after the other. Stress sets in quickly and I run back to the den to find two missing and the other three just playing together. I woof to send them into the den so I could find the lost pair but guess what, the den flooded so now I need to find the missing pups and find a new den.

Somehow I made it to a new den with all five pups but that was something that I don't want to experience again.

I love and hate the number of things that threaten pups because now it makes the game so much more difficult and realistic. Though why must the pups be so cute!

Anyways, I'll look forward to an update on your log! I'm glad things are going well so far for your pack

Yours sounds way more difficult lol. So far I have never encountered a flooded den but I’m wondering if it depends upon game difficulty settings? My pups have wandered off before, forgot to mention it in the journal. Lobo and Abni were trying to escape together! It’s cool that you can almost see your pups’ personalities.

I play on challenging so I think I was just unlucky that it happened. I had no idea flooded dens existed and was really scared when the pups refused to enter, though it's a neat touch. What difficulty do you play on?

My little wanderers were called Eclipse and Wriggles, random names that I called them on the spot.

I find it quite funny that we both have two partners in crime puppers

Also, just letting you know that I finally updated my own little log. I'm really enjoying writing it so far! Thanks for starting the log idea, haha

I play on accurate, but I was so scared about losing my pups so I went all the way on Easy mode. It was still difficult, can't imagine Accurate.

Wriggles is such a cute name, I also like the name Eclipse. I thought of random names too, mostly just combing Lumi and Abnus's names.
Will check out your log again!

I typically alternate between challenging and accurate on WQ, sometimes starting on challenging and making it harder once I get a mate.

I may try pups on accurate once I finally get the hang of actually keeping them alive

Yeah, I like the name Wriggles as well. I can imagine an absolute unit of a wolf, grey, muscular and majestic..called Wiggles.

I think it's very interesting what you're doing with Lumi and Abnus and their pack! Especially the Abnus project, that's very cool. I also find it interesting that you make a nice backstory for Lumi, that she's a husky instead of a wolf! I've done similar things in 2.7, pretending certain wolves were coyotes or foxes or red wolves... but you also have a good explanation for her backstory.

Since there are actually dogs and a ranch now in the new Lost River DLC, it might be cool to try something similar to that there- would you mind if I did something similar to this, and made a wolf-dog character of my own?
The darkest night gave birth to a breeze,
Which grew to a storm, which shook the trees
A howl of fury tore through the night,
Fueling the fight to make wrongs right
The cry of the night was spread and thinned,
Carried on the shadow of the wind

Thanks. And (since I don't have the LR DLC) I only realized up until a few days ago that there were dogs in the game!! I especially love the German shepherd model. Can you imagine if Siberian huskies were added to LR as well?
By the way, all of the pups have been renamed. Their names were originally placeholders.. and I didn't quite feel a connection with them. Their names are now Loup, Lobo, Lycan, Lupa, and Lupine :)
