I think it should be a choice, but not tied in with difficulty level if that makes sense? Just like we can choose difficulty level there should be a separate option to choose if the mate will be invincible like our player or like the pups.

What exactly is considered 'mastering' elk hunting? I went to all three territories first, and then realized it said I can't get a mate until I 'master' elk hunting so, but I don't understand. How many must I kill, before I can find a mate?

Good to hear this is going to be an option! I've always been put off by the large amount of elk carcasses in the game. I always would have preferred that the carcasses last longer, but there just be less of them just lying around.
