I guess it depends for me. If the story is realistic and has a forest and a lake/ocean/pond and realistic prey or other animals the wolf should be realistic. If it has a tiny unrealistic detail I wouldn't mind/notcie it in the story anyways. Only fantasy storys should have wolves with pink/purple/bl...

Genders don't really matter. Unless I would want to call people something toher then their name I use "They" or "Them' or "their". So yea I don't see why genders would matter to people.
