Are wolves colour blind?

Post by Mezzanota » Tue Jun 09, 2009 2:16 am

I know that dogs are colour blind, and dogs are related to wolves.

I also know that if you have a good graphics card, then when you open the Scent View (V button) when playing wolfquest, you will see in grey scale as well as being able to see scents in colours (eg yellow, blue, green, purple, etc)

So the question is:

Are wolves colour blind?

I would suggest that wolves see the world in black and white, just like dogs, something similar like in WQ game. This same feature is also on Playstation 2 game called Dog's Life.

I think so. Because their eyes' structure are not like ours (to put it simply).

I don't know. If they're anything like dogs, then the answer is: No, they are not colorblind.

However, their vision is not like ours. Dogs see in faded colors, not quite as sharp or vibrant as we do.

Here are some images to help explain:

Since dogs are sub-species of the Grey Wolf, my guess would be that wolf vision is fairly similar to dog vision.

As Snogdog Said, Dogs aren't really colour blind, they just see faded colours, so No, wolves aren't colour blind, if anything wolves would have better vision then dogs since they had to use them more for survivile then for fun like dogs do, and since dogs are domesticated, there vision wouldn't be used as much, mean they wouldn't be used for hunting or sharpening there vision.......if this doesn't make any sence, i'll try and type it up again in a way that it does.

More or less yes. But their colors may appear different from ours. Refer to the comparison chart:
http://vetnetwork.net/pca/articles/news ... ectrum.jpg

I've found nothing saying that wolf eye sight is better than dog vision. Please do not make assumptions unless you can provide a proof or source to your statement. Just because they are wild, does mean they will see better solors. Their eye sight simply may be more sharp.

Think about it. Some people have very poor eye sight, and others have very good. This does not mean they see different colors, simply how clear they see.

That is very true. I'm near-sighted and wear glasses. When I take off the glasses, I still see the same colours, but everything is blurry.

I didn't know dogs/wolves could only see in faded colour. I thought they were colourblind. Well, you learn something new everyday!

Actually, I read in a book that dogs are NOT color blind. But their view of color if dull and not as vibrant as our visions.

I do not know so much about wolves (Sadly)

I hope this helped!

Im pretty sure that they are, just because their head structure is so much like a dogs'.
